This article explains how to remove Android devices from Esper. See our iOS documentation for removing iPads or iPhones from Esper.
Sometimes, you need to remove devices from the console. There may be a few reasons for this:
- The device was lost or damaged.
- Your organization is updating its fleet and no longer needs that model.
Esper offers a few options to remove a device from the console.
Want to save time during a bulk delete? Create a new group to delete devices. Move those devices into the group and complete a removal in just a few clicks.

Remove Only vs. Wipe/Factory Reset and Remove
Before removing devices, you’ll need to determine what type of removal you’ll need to do. There are two types of device removals you can choose from:
- Remove Only: Removes the device from the console. The device will still have Esper content on it.
- Wipe/Factory Reset and Remove: Sends a Wipe and Factory Reset command and then removes the device. The device will be reset to factory settings.
The method depends on the situation. Because the device needs to communicate with Esper to perform a command, if Wipe or Factory Reset is selected, the device will remain in the console until it checks in with Esper.
When Wipe or Factory Reset isn’t selected the device will continue to have the assets it had on it previously, even if it was removed from the console. You can manually Factory Reset these devices, or do a hard reset to remove Esper.

Remove Registration
For certain devices, you might also see the option to Remove Registration. This is for devices that were registered with the console through their serial or IMEI numbers.
You may see the option to Factory Reset, Wipe, and Remove Registration, or just Remove Registration depending on the device's state.
There are two possible actions:
- When a device's serial number is entered into Esper, it's in the registered state. Once the physical device connects to Esper, it is onboarded and provisioned. Remove Registration removes the device from Esper and the references to it in our system while it's in its registered state.
- When in all other states, including after provisioning, the reference to seamless will be removed, but the device will remain in the console. You can always Remove and Factory Reset it to remove it from the console as well. Remove Registration also allows you to add the same serial number to a different tenant if you're moving the device.
Removing Android Devices in Blueprints
Locate the group or device you’d like to remove.
Then, select Actions > … > Remove Device.
Remove Only
Removing a device removes it from the console, but it may still have Esper software installed.
To remove the device from the console, ensure Factory Reset and Wipe External Storage are not selected.
Then press Continue.
Type REMOVE DEVICE the removal and press Confirm.
The device will be removed from the console.
Wipe and Factory Reset
This option removes the device from the console and removes Esper software installed on it. Because this is a command, the device will remain in the console until the command succeeds on the device.
First, select Wipe and/or Factory Reset, then press Continue.
Then press Continue and confirm the deletion.
After the command completes on the device, it’ll be removed from the console.
Check if the device was removed
We recommend searching for the device once the removal process is complete. The message “No devices matching this search criteria” should appear.
Declutter the console by removing devices you no longer use.
Removing Devices from Templates
Only devices on the legacy Templates experience will appear in this view. If you'd like to move these devices to the Blueprints experience, you won't need to remove them from Esper. See our Migrating to Blueprints guide for more information.
Go to Devices and Groups and click on Select devices. Then, select the devices you’d like to remove.
Click on the Action drop-down menu, and select Remove / Factory Reset Device.
Remove only
To remove only, de-select both “Factory Reset the Devices” and “Wipe External Storage”.
Esper software will stay on the device if “Factory Reset the Devices” or “Wipe External Storage” are selected. In that case, the device won’t be removed from the console.
Wipe and remove
To remove and Factory Reset and/or Wipe the devices, select Factory Reset the Devices and Wipe External Storage. The next time the device checks in with the console, it will be removed.
When the Remove Device/Factory Reset Option is Disabled
If the Factory Reset/Remove Device option is disabled, that means the device cannot be removed from the console. There may be a setting on it that prevents it from being factory reset in the console. Or you may not have permission to factory.
Check User Management to see if you have permission to Factory Reset.
To reset or remove these types of devices, you’ll need to have the device on hand. Then, open Esper Admin settings and select Factory Reset from the device.
