First, determine if your devices were provisioned via Apple Business (formerly Apple Business Manager or ABM) or Direct Profile. The best way to do this is to go to your Apple Business portal and verify the devices in it with their Esper counterparts. If a device isn’t listed in the portal, it may have been provisioned through Direct Profile.

Removing an Apple Business Device
To remove an Apple Business provisioned device, remove the device from Esper first and then unassign it in Apple Business.
In Esper, go to Devices & Groups, locate the device, and click on the ellipsis (...), then select Factory Reset.
In the Apple Business portal, locate the device.
Warning: Do not perform a sync in Apple Business at this step, or the device will appear in Esper with a default Blueprint.
Then, select Unassign Device Management.
Select Unassign from the current MDM.
Then press Continue.
The device should be unassigned from Esper.
Removing a Direct Profile Device (from the Console)
If you’ve added a device via Direct Profile, you have two options to remove the device from Esper. You can:
- Factory Reset the device
- Remove the profile via the Apple Configurator App
Factory Reset
From the console, locate the device in Devices and Groups and click on the ellipsis (...) under the Action column. Then choose Factory Resert.
Then select if you want to Factory Reset or Wipe the device.
For devices marked disabled, you'll need to ensure Factory Reset and Wipe AREN'T selected. Hover over a device to see its status.
Then press Continue.
The device will perform a Factory Reset.
You can also perform a Factory Reset from the physical device.
Removing a Direct Profile Device (from Apple Configurator)
First, you’ll need the Apple Configurator App installed on your MacOS computer. Then, connect the device to your computer using a cable.
Then, open the Apple Configurator App.
Right-click on the device.
Then select Remove > Profiles.
Select Esper MDM.
Then click on Remove Profiles and confirm the removal.
Checking if the device was removed
We recommend searching for the device once the removal process is complete. The message “No devices matching this search criteria” should appear.
Declutter the console by removing devices you no longer use.
