MAC address randomization settings have device-specific limitations in Esper. This article explains which devices support this feature and what workarounds are available if your Samsung or WearOS device doesn't comply with your network policies.

Understand MAC address randomization support

Esper's MAC address randomization feature is only supported on Lenovo devices running Android 12 or later. Samsung devices, including Galaxy Watches running WearOS, do not support this feature through Esper.

If you attempt to disable MAC address randomization on a Samsung or WearOS device, the setting will not persist. Additionally, any Wi-Fi profile update through Esper will override manual MAC randomization settings you've configured on the device itself.

Check if your device supports MAC address randomization

In the Esper Console, go to Blueprint → Connectivity.
Look for the MAC Address Randomization toggle.
If the toggle is present and your device is a Lenovo model running Android 12 or later, the setting will apply to your device.
If your device is a Samsung Galaxy Watch or other WearOS device, this feature is not supported.

What to do if you have a Samsung or WearOS device

Since MAC address randomization cannot be disabled on Samsung or WearOS devices through Esper, consider these alternatives:

Remove MAC filtering: If your network uses MAC address filtering, disable it for the affected SSID and use an alternative access control method such as certificate-based authentication or VPN.
Create a separate network segment: Set up a separate SSID dedicated to WearOS devices that does not enforce MAC address filtering.
Accept randomized MAC addresses: If neither option above is feasible, you may need to operate your WearOS devices on your network with MAC address randomization enabled.

Avoid manual workarounds

Do not manually disable MAC address randomization on the device itself. Any manual change will be overwritten the next time Esper updates the Wi-Fi profile through the UPDATE_WIFI_AP command or adds a new network through ADD_WIFI_AP. This override behavior is a known limitation of how Wi-Fi profiles are managed on these devices.

Troubleshooting other devices

If you're using a non-Samsung Android device and the MAC address randomization setting from your Blueprint is not applying:

Verify your device is running Android 12 or later.
Confirm your device is a compatible Lenovo model.
Check that your device has the latest Esper Agent version installed.
