Esper Settings icon appears as persistent visual overlay on top of app (non-interactive artifact)
Android
If you see an Esper Settings icon appearing as a persistent overlay on top of your app, and tapping it does nothing, follow these steps to diagnose and resolve the issue.
Before you begin
Gather the following information about your device:
- Device model
- Android OS version
- Esper Agent version (visible in Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Apps)
- The name of the app where the overlay appears
Step 1: Confirm the overlay is non-interactive
Tap the Esper logo overlay. If it launches Esper Settings, this is an intent issue—see Android App Intents for details. If tapping does nothing, proceed to the next step.
Step 2: Check if your app uses Esper SDK or device info API calls
Contact your development team and confirm whether the affected app calls any Esper SDK methods or device information APIs (for example, EsperDeviceSDK). Even read-only API calls can sometimes trigger agent UI elements.
Step 3: Collect a bug report from the affected device
- Open the Esper Console and navigate to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Bug Report.
- Follow the steps in Logs and Bug Reports — Remote Bug Report to generate and download the bug report.
- Ensure the affected app is in the foreground when you collect the report.
- Contact Esper Support and attach the bug report. Our team will analyze the Esper Agent logs to identify any unexpected overlay draw calls.
Step 4: Test with a different Blueprint
Apply a custom Blueprint to the device (even a minimal one with the same settings as your current Blueprint) to rule out Blueprint-specific behavior:
- Navigate to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Blueprint.
- Select a different Blueprint and apply it.
- Check whether the overlay still appears.
Step 5: Update the Esper Agent
To update the Esper Agent, go to Esper Software Updates in the Esper Console and select Esper Agent. You can deploy the update to individual devices, selected groups, or your entire fleet. For step-by-step instructions, see Deploying Esper Software Updates.
Still need help?
If the overlay persists after following these steps, contact Esper Support. include:
- Your device model and Android OS version
- The Esper Agent version
- The name of the affected app
- The bug report you collected in Step 3
