App installation conflict: Play Store version blocking enterprise build installation
Android
When a device has both a Play Store version and an Esper enterprise version of the same app installed, Android prevents updating because the two versions are signed with different certificates. This article explains how to identify affected devices and resolve the issue by uninstalling the Play Store version before reinstalling the enterprise build.
Before you begin
This issue occurs when:
- A device has the same app installed from two different sources (Play Store and Esper)
- The two versions are signed with different certificates
- You attempt to push an enterprise app update without first removing the Play Store version
Android enforces APK signing certificate consistency—an installed app can only be upgraded by an APK signed with the same certificate. The Play Store version must be fully uninstalled before the enterprise APK can be installed.
Step 1: Identify affected devices
- In the Esper Console, navigate to Reports → App Reports
- Generate a new report and filter by:
-
App Type:
google(to show Play Store installs only) - App Name: the application you need to fix
- Version Name: the outdated version number
-
App Type:
- Export the report to get a list of device IDs and names running the Play Store build
- For detailed instructions, see App Reports
- Navigate to Devices & Groups → [Target Group]
- Click Actions → Apps & Configuration
- Select the application
- Choose Uninstall and confirm
- Apply the action to all affected devices (or to a group containing only the devices you identified in Step 1)
- In Devices & Groups → [Target Group] → Actions → Apps & Configuration
- Select the correct enterprise application and version
- Choose Install and apply to all devices in scope
- For more details, see Managing a Group's Apps
- Filter by App Type =
googleand the app name — the report should return zero devices - Filter by App Type =
Enterpriseand the correct version number — all previously affected devices should now appear with the correct build - Restrict Play Store access on devices where you manage apps through Esper
- Configure managed Play Store to hide or suppress the consumer version of the app
- For large fleets, create a temporary device group containing only affected devices before executing bulk uninstall or reinstall actions
Step 2: Uninstall the Play Store version
Note: Devices must be online to receive the uninstall command. Offline devices will queue the command and execute it on next check-in.
Step 3: Install the enterprise version
Verify the fix
Run the App Report again with these filters:
Troubleshooting
Uninstall command fails on specific devices
Check the device's online status in Devices & Groups. Commands cannot execute on offline devices. Try uninstalling via Devices & Groups → [Device] → Apps → Uninstall to confirm the device is reachable.
Installation still fails after uninstall
Request a bug report from the device by navigating to Devices & Groups → [Device] → Device Details → Bug Report. This will help identify the install error.
Play Store keeps reinstalling the app
If Play Store access is not restricted and the app keeps reinstalling automatically, consider disabling Play Store access or restricting the app in your managed Play Store configuration to prevent end users from downloading the consumer version.
Prevent this issue in the future
To prevent Play Store and enterprise versions from conflicting:
