Esper describes a device's lifecycle with a set of device states. The API and the console use the same underlying states, but they don't always display them the same way. Depending on where you look in the console, a state may appear under its exact API name, under a friendlier label, or grouped into a broader category.
This document maps each API state to how it appears in the console, for iOS, Linux, Windows, and Android devices. It covers places in the console where states show up:
- Device State column: Shows the exact API state name.
- Device State filter dropdown: Uses simplified labels and groups several states under Others.
- Dashboard > Device Status panel: Groups every state except
ACTIVEas Unprovisioned. - Reports: Device reports list the full set of granular states, such as
GOOGLE_PLAY_CONFIGURATIONorBRANDING_PROCESSED.

The API and the Device State column use the same state names, so they're the most reliable reference when you need precision. The filter dropdown and the Dashboard summarize those states for quick scanning, which means some detail drops out. In general, rely on API state names when you're writing integrations, pulling reports, or troubleshooting a specific device. Use the console labels when you're describing a fleet at a high level.
If you find a state that isn't covered here, or a console label that doesn't match this mapping, let the Customer Education team know so we can keep this document and the API documentation in sync.
