OPPO/Realme device stuck in recovery mode after successful Esper enrollment: power-cycle and contact Esper Support
Android
If your OPPO or Realme device is stuck in a recovery mode boot loop after successfully enrolling in Esper, follow these steps to resolve the issue. This typically occurs after a device restart following enrollment.
Before you begin
OPPO and Realme devices use ColorOS and have non-standard recovery mode behavior. Your device may take 7–10 minutes to boot during this troubleshooting process. Allow the full boot window before moving to the next step.
Step 1: Perform a manual power-cycle
- Hold the power button until the device shuts down completely.
- Power the device back on and wait the full 7–10 minutes for it to boot.
- Check whether the device completes a full boot into Android and the Esper Esper Agent launches automatically.
If the device boots successfully, monitor it for a few hours to ensure the boot loop does not recur.
Step 2: Try a second power-cycle if needed
If your device re-enters recovery mode after the first restart:
- Power off the device again by holding the power button.
- Power it back on and allow the full 7–10 minute boot window.
- Check the Esper Console to confirm the device appears Online in Devices & Groups.
Step 3: Wipe the device from the Esper Console
If your device reaches a bootable state and appears online:
- In the Esper Console, navigate to Devices & Groups.
- Select your device and open Device Details.
- Click Actions and select Wipe Device.
- Confirm the factory reset command.
The device must remain online long enough for the command to execute. If the device re-enters recovery mode before the wipe completes, try the next step.
Step 4: Perform a manual factory reset using the hardware recovery menu
If your device is physically accessible and the Esper Console wipe did not work:
- Power off the device completely.
- Hold Power + Volume Down during boot to access the OEM recovery menu. (Key combinations may vary by device model.)
- Use the volume buttons to navigate to Factory Reset or Wipe Data.
- Confirm the reset using the power button.
- Wait for the device to complete the reset and reboot into Android.
After the device successfully boots, re-provision it using your original QR code or Zero-Touch configuration.
Step 5: Verify the device is working
Confirm that your device:
- Completes a full boot into Android without re-entering recovery mode
- Shows the Esper Esper Agent launching automatically
- Appears Online in Devices & Groups in the Esper Console
If manual reset fails
If the hardware recovery reset does not work or the recovery menu is inaccessible, your device may have a hardware-level failure or corrupted firmware. Contact the device manufacturer for service.
If multiple devices are affected
If you have multiple OPPO or Realme devices experiencing the same boot loop issue in your fleet, this may indicate a compatibility problem that requires investigation. Contact Esper Support and provide:
- Exact device model and Android/ColorOS firmware version
- Esper Agent version installed when the issue began
- Whether a system update was pushed or auto-applied immediately before the issue started
- Number of affected devices
- ADB bugreport if the device can be accessed during its brief online window (your Esper Support team can guide you through this)
