Web App creation request with internal URL and self-signed certificate: backend creation via Esper Support team
Android
If you need to create a Web App in Esper that points to an internal URL or uses a self-signed HTTPS certificate, the standard Web App creation process in the Esper Console won't work. This article explains how to request backend creation of your Web App.
Before you begin
Web App creation through the Esper Console requires publicly accessible URLs with valid HTTPS certificates. If your target URL is hosted on an internal network (intranet) or uses a self-signed certificate, you'll need to request that Esper create and upload the Web App to your account directly.
How to request a Web App with an internal URL or self-signed certificate
-
Gather the required information. Before contacting Esper Support, prepare:
- App Name (the display name that will appear in Esper Console)
- Target URL (full URL including port and path, for example:
https://intracom.example.app:8080/path/) - Icon file (512 × 512 px PNG)
- Display Mode:
Standalone,Minimal UI,Fullscreen, orBrowser - Special permissions required (camera, microphone, location) or confirmation that none are needed
- Target Groups and/or Devices where you want to install the Web App
- Submit a support ticket. Contact Esper Support with all the information from step 1. Clearly note that your URL is internal or uses a self-signed certificate.
- Wait for the Web App to be created. The Esper team will package your Web App using internal tools and upload it directly to your account.
- Test on a single device first. When notified that your Web App is ready, install it on one test device before deploying to all target groups. This allows you to verify that the Web App launches correctly and reaches your internal URL.
-
Confirm the test device works. Verify that:
- The Web App launches successfully
- The internal URL loads in the Web App
- The device can reach your internal network (via VPN or on-site connection)
- Deploy to your target groups. Once testing is successful, deploy the Web App to all target Groups and Devices.
Troubleshooting
Web App launches but the URL fails to load on the device
Verify that the device is connected to the same internal network where your intranet URL is accessible (for example, through a corporate VPN or on-site Wi-Fi). If the device cannot reach your internal network, it won't be able to load the URL. This is a network connectivity issue, not an Esper configuration issue.
Certificate error appears in the Web App
If your internal site uses a self-signed certificate, the device's WebView may block the request. You have two options:
- Install the certificate on the device using Esper's certificate management feature. Go to Devices & Groups → [Device] → Security → Install Certificate.
- Use a network-level solution such as a corporate VPN or local Certificate Authority trust to allow certificate validation.
The internal site later obtains a valid public certificate
Even if your internal site later becomes externally accessible or obtains a valid certificate, continue to request Web App creation and updates through Esper Support using this same process. Do not attempt to recreate the Web App through the Esper Console.
Icon requirements
Your icon must be exactly 512 × 512 pixels in PNG format. If your icon has different dimensions, Esper Support will request a replacement before creating your Web App.
Display Mode details
The Minimal UI display mode hides the browser navigation bar. If your internal site has multiple pages or requires back-navigation, confirm that Minimal UI is the right choice. Otherwise, use Standalone or Browser mode.
