Customer-Provided APK upload to Esper production environment: agent-assisted sideload for private/enterprise apps

If you have a privately developed or enterprise application that you need to deploy to your managed devices, you can upload the signed APK to your Esper Console. This guide walks you through uploading a customer-provided APK to your production environment.

Before you begin

You'll need:

A signed APK file (release-signed, not debug or unsigned)
Access to download the APK from your file-sharing service (SharePoint, Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.)
Console access with Apps & Configuration permissions
The direct download link to the APK

If you don't have Apps & Configuration permissions or prefer assistance with the upload, contact Esper Support and provide the download link to the APK.

How to upload a private APK

Download the signed APK from your file-sharing service using the provided link.
Verify the file is a valid, signed .apk file. Esper rejects unsigned or debug-signed builds.
Log in to your Esper Console at https://<your-tenant>.esper.cloud.
Navigate to Apps → Private Apps → Add App.
Select the downloaded APK file.
Enter the app name and version metadata if prompted.
Click Upload and wait for processing to complete.
Confirm the app appears in your private app library with the correct package name and version number.

Verify the upload

Once the upload completes:

Check that the app is visible in your console's private app library
Verify the package name and version number match your expectations
Test by adding the app to a Blueprint or pushing it to a device group

Troubleshoot upload issues

Upload fails with an error

Confirm the APK is signed with a release keystore. Request a new signed build from your developer if the current APK is unsigned or debug-signed.

APK uploads but doesn't appear in the library

Check whether your enterprise has a storage quota limit
Verify the app's package name doesn't conflict with an existing app in your library

External download link is expired or access-restricted

Request a refreshed link from the file owner with broader access permissions
Ask for an alternative delivery method, such as a direct email attachment (for smaller files)

APK is stuck in processing state for more than 15 minutes

Contact Esper Support to investigate server-side errors or processing delays

Upload times out for very large APKs (>500 MB)

Programmatic upload via API

If you prefer to automate APK uploads, you can use the Esper API instead of the Esper Console:

POST /v0/enterprise/{enterprise_id}/application/
