Kiosk Admin PIN retrieval and URL update via Chrome Managed Configuration in Blueprint
Android
If your kiosk devices are locked in kiosk mode and you need to find the Admin PIN or update the URL displayed on the screen, this article walks you through retrieving that information and making configuration changes via Esper's Blueprint system.
Before you begin
You'll need:
- Access to the Esper Console
- Admin or Editor permissions for your Blueprint
- The device serial number or hardware ID (if you don't know which Esper account or tenant the device is enrolled under)
Step 1: Confirm which tenant your device is enrolled under
If you're unsure which Esper account or tenant your kiosk devices belong to, gather one of the following:
- Device serial number
- Hardware ID
- Email address associated with the account
Use this information to locate your account in the Esper Console. If you're still unable to identify the correct tenant, contact Esper Support with your device details.
Step 2: Find the Admin PIN
Kiosk devices require an Admin PIN to exit kiosk mode. The PIN is configured at the Blueprint level, not on the device itself.
- In the Esper Console, go to Blueprints → [Your Blueprint Name] → Esper Settings → Customize Settings → Admin Mode.
- Look for the PIN field. Click the eye icon next to it to reveal the PIN value.
- If no custom PIN has been set, the default Admin PIN is
1234.
Use this PIN to enter Admin Mode on your kiosk device when needed.
Step 3: Update the kiosk URL
The URL displayed on your kiosk screen is controlled by Chrome Managed Configuration settings in your Blueprint. You cannot change it locally on the device while kiosk mode is active.
- In the Esper Console, navigate to Blueprints → [Your Blueprint Name] → Apps & Configurations.
- Find and select Google Chrome.
- Open Managed Configurations.
- Update the URL field with your new value. Common configuration keys include:
HomepageLocationRestoreOnStartupURLs- OEM-specific kiosk URL fields (check your device manufacturer's documentation)
- Save your changes.
Step 4: Publish and apply the Blueprint
- Publish the updated Blueprint.
- Your devices will automatically pull and apply the updated configuration. This typically takes 5–15 minutes on a stable network connection.
To force faster synchronization, go to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Actions and select Sync or Apply Blueprint.
Verify the change
Check your kiosk device to confirm the URL has updated. If you need to verify the change by entering Admin Mode on the device, use the Admin PIN from Step 2.
Troubleshooting
The device hasn't picked up the new URL after 15 minutes:
Force synchronization manually. Go to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Actions and select Sync or Apply Blueprint. Wait a few minutes, then check the device again.
Chrome Managed Configuration changes aren't taking effect:
Verify that:
- Google Chrome is configured as the kiosk browser in your Blueprint
- You're using the correct Managed Configuration key for the URL policy
- The Blueprint has been published
The Admin PIN isn't working (including the default 1234):
This may indicate the device is enrolled under a different Blueprint or tenant. Contact Esper Support with your device serial number and we'll help you locate the correct configuration.
Your kiosk uses a custom browser app instead of Google Chrome:
The URL update method will differ. Check the Managed Configuration documentation for your specific kiosk app to find the correct policy keys.
