VPP app missing from device-level install dropdown: app must be added to Blueprint (or Blueprint behavior differs for VPP vs. Play Store apps on iOS)
iOS
AndroidiOS
If a VPP-licensed app is visible in your Apple VPP library but doesn't appear in the device-level install dropdown, you likely need to add it to your Blueprint first. This article explains why and how to resolve it.
Before you begin
This article applies to iOS and iPadOS devices managed through Esper with an active Apple VPP token. Check that:
- Your VPP token is active and synced at Apps > Apple VPP > Token Status
- You have available licenses for the app in Apple Business Manager
- The app is already present in your Apple VPP library
How to add a VPP app to your Blueprint
To make a VPP app installable on devices in a Blueprint, you must first add it to that Blueprint's Apps & Configuration section.
- In the Esper Console, go to Blueprints and open the Blueprint assigned to your device.
- Navigate to the Apps & Configuration section.
- Search for and add the VPP app you want to install. Set the install behavior (for example, required or optional).
- Click Publish to save your changes.
- Go to Devices & Groups, find your device, and trigger a Blueprint converge to apply the updated configuration.
- Wait for the device to sync. Verify the app now appears in the device's installed apps list in the Esper Console and is functional on the physical device.
If the app still doesn't appear
Try these troubleshooting steps:
- Re-sync your VPP token: Go to Apps > Apple VPP > Token Status and manually trigger a sync. If the token has expired, renew it through Apple Business Manager and upload it to Esper.
- Verify license availability: Check Apple Business Manager to confirm you have unused licenses for this app. If all licenses are deployed, the app may be hidden from the install list.
- Confirm Blueprint converge completed: Check the device's sync status in the Esper Console to ensure the Blueprint changes were applied successfully.
- Check device connectivity: Ensure the device is online and can reach Esper's servers.
Deploying an app to a single device
Adding an app to a Blueprint will push it to all devices on that Blueprint. If you need to install a VPP app on only one specific device without modifying the Blueprint, this workflow may have limitations. Contact Esper Support with details about your use case and we can help you find the best approach.
Still need help?
If you've completed these steps and the app still doesn't appear, submit a support ticket. include:
- The Blueprint name
- The VPP app name and App Store ID
- Your device ID
- A screenshot or screen recording showing the issue
