Deleted Esper Tenant Cannot Be Recovered — Reprovision Devices Into a New Tenant
Android
If your Esper tenant has been permanently deleted due to prolonged inactivity or non-payment, it cannot be recovered. This article explains how to reprovision your devices into a new or existing Esper tenant.
Understanding permanent tenant deletion
Esper's inactivity policy means that tenants inactive for an extended period may be permanently deleted after multiple email warnings are sent to your registered contacts. Once deleted, your tenant URL, enrolled devices, Blueprints, app configurations, and all related data are completely removed from Esper's systems. There is no way to restore a permanently deleted tenant.
Devices that were enrolled under a deleted tenant remain in the field but lose all MDM management capabilities. They cannot receive commands or be managed through the Esper Console until they are reprovisioned into an active tenant.
Before you begin
- Verify that your tenant has been permanently deleted (not suspended or locked)
- Gather all devices that were enrolled under the deleted tenant
- Ensure you have physical access to each device for factory reset
- Decide whether to create a new Esper tenant or use an existing active tenant for reprovisioning
Step 1: Communicate the permanent deletion
Your Esper tenant and all associated data have been permanently removed and cannot be restored. If you received email notifications before deletion, review them to understand the timeline.
Step 2: Factory reset each device
Because devices enrolled under a deleted tenant cannot receive remote commands, you must perform a manual factory reset on each device.
- If the device is accessible via its UI: Navigate to Settings → General Management → Reset → Factory Data Reset and confirm.
- If the device is in kiosk mode or locked: Perform a hardware factory reset using your device's specific key combination. Typically this is Power + Volume Down during boot to enter recovery mode, then select Wipe data / factory reset. Consult your device manufacturer's documentation for the exact procedure.
- If the device cannot be reset using standard methods: Contact Esper Support for guidance on device-specific reset procedures or OEM workarounds.
Step 3: Set up your new or existing tenant
If you don't have an active Esper tenant, visit esper.io to create a new one. If you already have an active tenant, you can use that instead.
Step 4: Reprovision your devices
Once each device is factory reset, reprovision it into your active tenant using one of these methods:
- QR Code: In the Esper Console, go to Provisioning → Provisioning Methods, generate a QR code, and scan it on each device.
- Zero-Touch Enrollment (ZTE): Configure your devices through the Google Zero-Touch portal with Esper as your Esper Agent.
- ADB Provisioning: Use Android Debug Bridge (ADB) for development or testing scenarios.
Step 5: Verify reprovisioning
- In the Esper Console, navigate to Devices & Groups.
- Confirm that all reprovisioned devices appear in your device list.
- Verify that each device shows a status of Online.
- Send a test command (such as a remote reboot) to confirm management connectivity.
If your devices cannot be reset
Device is stuck in Device Owner mode: If your device is locked in Device Owner mode and standard factory reset procedures are blocked, contact your device manufacturer for a forced reset procedure or EDL/fastboot flash option if supported.
Devices cannot be physically accessed: If your devices are deployed in remote locations (such as hospitals), you must arrange physical access to each device before reprovisioning. Esper Support cannot remotely intervene on devices whose tenant no longer exists.
Questions about the deletion policy: Review Esper's terms of service for details on the tenant lifecycle and notification process. Contact Esper Support if you have questions about how this policy applies to your situation.
Prevent future deletions
- Monitor your email for communications from
@esper.ioaddresses. Whitelist@esper.ioin your email system to avoid filtering notifications to spam or promotions folders. - Ensure your account's registered contact email is actively monitored.
- Respond to all pre-deletion warnings promptly to maintain your tenant's active status.
