iOS unsupervised enrollment: apps fail to install and Remote Viewer unavailable — supervise device via Apple Configurator to resolve
iOS
AndroidiOS
If your iOS device enrolled via QR code fails to install apps and Remote Viewer is unavailable, the device may be in an unsupervised state. Apple's device management framework restricts certain management capabilities to supervised devices only. This article explains why this happens and how to supervise your device to unlock full management capabilities.
Before you begin
You'll need:
- A MacBook with Apple Configurator installed (available free from the Mac App Store)
- A USB cable to connect your iPad to the Mac
How to check if your device is unsupervised
- In the Esper Console, go to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Device Info.
- Check the supervision status. If it shows "Unsupervised," your device needs to be supervised to unlock app installation and Remote Viewer.
Why app installation fails on unsupervised iOS devices
When an iOS device is enrolled via QR code without first being placed into Supervised Mode, Apple's device management framework prevents the Esper Agent from pushing app installations and establishing Remote Viewer sessions. This is an Apple platform-level restriction—supervision must be established prior to enrollment using Apple Configurator.
How to supervise your device and unlock full management
- Obtain a MacBook with Apple Configurator installed.
- Physically connect your iPad to the MacBook via USB.
- Follow the Esper Help Center guide to supervise the device and re-enroll it: iOS Onboarding with Direct Profile / QR Code — Supervised Mode section.
- After supervision and re-enrollment, return to the Esper Console and confirm the device's supervision status is now Supervised.
- Re-apply your blueprint: go to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Blueprint → Apply. Apps should now begin downloading and installing.
- Verify Remote Viewer works: navigate to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Remote Viewer and confirm you can initiate a session.
If apps still fail to install after supervision
If the "This action is not supported for unsupervised devices" error persists even after successful supervision:
- Confirm the blueprint includes the correct app versions and that the apps are compatible with your iOS version.
- Ensure your Esper Agent version meets the minimum requirement listed in the Using Remote Viewer for iOS documentation.
If you don't have access to a Mac
Supervision requires Apple Configurator, which is Mac-only software. There is no alternative path to supervision—this is an Apple hardware and software requirement.
For future device procurement, consider using Apple Business Manager (ABM) combined with Zero-Touch Enrollment to ensure devices are supervised from the factory.
