Landscape wallpaper upload blocked on iOS/iPadOS kiosk devices: rotate image before upload, but expect iOS to re-rotate on-device

When you try to upload a landscape-oriented wallpaper to an iOS or iPadOS Blueprint, Esper may reject the image with a validation error. This article explains why this happens and describes the available workaround.

Understanding the limitation

The Esper Console enforces a validation rule that requires wallpaper images to be taller than they are wide (portrait or square orientation). This means landscape-oriented images are rejected during upload with the error:

The image is [width] pixel wide. It's supposed to be less than or equal to height

This is a platform-level limitation specific to iOS and iPadOS. Even if you rotate a landscape image to portrait before uploading, iOS may re-rotate or crop it on the device, resulting in a distorted wallpaper on landscape-locked iPads.

Before you begin

You have access to the Esper Console with permissions to edit Blueprints.
You have a landscape wallpaper image you want to apply to landscape-locked iOS or iPadOS devices.
You understand that this workaround may not produce ideal results on devices locked to landscape orientation.

How to apply a landscape wallpaper (workaround)

Rotate your landscape wallpaper image 90° to portrait orientation (so height is greater than width).
In the Esper Console, go to Blueprints → [Your Blueprint Name] → Appearance → Wallpaper.
Upload the rotated portrait image to the Home Screen field.
Upload the same rotated portrait image to the Lock Screen field.
Click Save.
Navigate to Blueprints → [Your Blueprint Name] → Converge.
Select the target devices and click Apply.
After convergence completes, check your devices to see how the wallpaper renders.

Important: Expected behavior on landscape-locked devices

On iPad or iPadOS devices locked to landscape orientation, iOS will re-rotate or crop the portrait-submitted image. This may result in a distorted, misaligned, or incorrectly cropped wallpaper display. This is not a configuration issue you can fix—it is a limitation of the Esper iOS Blueprint wallpaper feature.
