Limiting Battery Charge to 80% on Android Tablets Using Knox Service Plugin
Android
If your Samsung Knox-enabled Android tablets are experiencing battery swelling or degradation from continuous charging, you can limit the battery charge to approximately 80–85% using the Knox Service Plugin. This guide walks you through configuring and deploying this setting across your device fleet.
Before you begin
This solution applies only to Samsung devices running Knox-supported firmware. Verify that:
- Your devices are Samsung tablets with Knox support
- Your enterprise account is licensed for Samsung Knox
- Devices are enrolled in your Esper organization
Important: If your devices already show visible battery swelling, remove them from service immediately—this setting prevents future damage but cannot reverse existing physical harm.
How to approve Knox Service Plugin
- In the Esper Console, navigate to Apps → Play Store
- Search for Knox Service Plugin
- Click Approve to make the app available to your enterprise
How to enable battery protection in managed configuration
- In Apps → Play Store, find Knox Service Plugin
- Click Manage Configuration
- Search for Enable battery protection
- Toggle the setting to On
- Scroll to the bottom and click Save
How to deploy the configuration via Blueprint
- Navigate to Blueprints and open an existing Blueprint targeting your Samsung devices, or create a new one
- Under Apps & Configurations, click Add
- Select Knox Service Plugin
- Attach the managed configuration you saved in the previous section
- Click Save and then Publish
How to test on a single device first
- In the Esper Console, navigate to Devices & Groups and select one test device
- Go to Blueprint → Apply
- Select the updated Blueprint and click Apply
- Wait for the Blueprint to converge (device compliance status will show when complete)
- Verify that Knox Service Plugin is installed on the device
- Discharge the device to below 85% battery
- Plug the device in and monitor charging behavior
- Confirm that charging stops at approximately 85%
Note: The exact charging threshold may be 80–85% depending on your device model and Knox firmware version. Test on your target hardware to confirm the exact behavior before rolling out fleet-wide.
How to roll out to your entire fleet
Once you've verified the configuration works on your test device:
- Navigate to Blueprints and open your updated Blueprint
- Click Converge or apply the Blueprint to your device groups
- Monitor the compliance status in Devices & Groups → Compliance to confirm all devices receive the configuration
Troubleshooting
Knox Service Plugin doesn't appear in Play Store
- Confirm your enterprise account is licensed for Samsung Knox
- Verify the Play Store app approval is scoped to your Esper organization
Battery protection option is missing from managed configuration
- Check that your Knox Service Plugin version supports the battery protection API for your device model
- Consult Samsung Knox documentation for minimum version requirements specific to your hardware
Charging doesn't stop at the expected threshold
- Navigate to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Compliance to verify the managed configuration was successfully deployed
- Confirm the device is still enrolled and connected to Esper
Devices are not Samsung or don't support Knox
- This solution only works on Samsung Knox-capable devices. For other Android devices, contact Esper Support to discuss alternative options
