Exiting Kiosk Mode for Servicing: Access Esper Settings via Hidden Dock Without Internet
Android
If your device is locked in Kiosk mode and you've lost internet connectivity, you can still access Esper Settings locally using the Hidden Dock. This lets you reconnect to Wi-Fi and restore remote management without needing the Esper Console.
Before you begin
The Hidden Dock must be enabled in your device's Blueprint configuration before you can use this method. If it was disabled, you won't be able to access it locally. You can verify this in the Esper Console at Blueprints → [Blueprint Name] → Kiosk → Hidden Dock toggle.
How to access the Hidden Dock and Esper Settings
- On the Kiosk-locked device, activate the Hidden Dock using the gesture defined in your Blueprint's Kiosk settings. This is typically a long-press or multi-tap on a specific screen region. Check with your deployment team if you're unsure of the exact gesture.
- Tap Esper Settings from the Hidden Dock menu.
- Navigate to Wi-Fi and select your network.
- Enter your network credentials if prompted, then wait for the device to reconnect.
How to exit Kiosk mode after reconnecting
- Once the device is back online, open the Esper Console at
console.esper.io. - Go to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Device Mode.
- Switch the device from Kiosk mode to Multi-Application or your target mode.
- Verify the device mode has updated and the device status shows as Online. The home screen should no longer be restricted to the Kiosk application.
Troubleshooting
- Hidden Dock gesture doesn't appear: Check that the Hidden Dock hasn't been disabled in your Blueprint settings. If it's disabled, the dock cannot be accessed locally.
- Esper Settings not visible in the Hidden Dock: Verify in your Blueprint configuration that Esper Settings access is permitted within the Hidden Dock options.
- Device won't reconnect to Wi-Fi: If your network uses certificate-based authentication (like enterprise WPA2), you may need physical access to the device or a direct Ethernet connection if your device supports it.
- Power cycling doesn't help: Restarting the device won't exit Kiosk mode — it will simply reboot back into Kiosk mode as configured. This is expected behavior.
