Device unreachable after Blueprint Wi-Fi misconfiguration: recover offline device via Hidden Dock
Android
If your device loses network connectivity after a Wi-Fi misconfiguration in a Blueprint, you can recover it using the Hidden Dock. This article walks you through reconnecting your device to Wi-Fi so it becomes reachable again in the Esper Console.
Before you begin
This recovery method requires physical access to your device. You'll need to use the Hidden Dock—a built-in recovery interface that remains accessible even when the Settings app is restricted by your Blueprint.
This solution applies if your device meets these conditions:
- Your device is offline in the Esper Console
- Remote commands remain in Queued or Acknowledged state indefinitely
- The Settings app is blocked by your Blueprint configuration
- Your device previously had a working Wi-Fi connection that was lost after a Blueprint update
Step 1: Locate and access your device
You must have physical access to your device to complete this recovery. Remote remediation is not possible while the device is offline.
Step 2: Open a permitted application
Open any app that your Blueprint allows. In Multi-App Mode, tap any app on the launcher. The Hidden Dock is more reliably accessible when an app is in the foreground.
Step 3: Trigger the Hidden Dock
Press the power button approximately 7 times in rapid succession. When prompted, unlock the screen. Immediately after unlocking, watch for a chevron (›) icon to appear—typically at the edge of the screen. The icon disappears within about 1 second, so watch carefully.
Step 4: Tap the chevron icon
Tap the chevron icon the moment it appears to open the Hidden Dock panel.
If you miss the icon, repeat Step 3. Multiple attempts may be required. If the method fails with an app open, try the power button sequence from the home screen as a fallback.
Tip: Have a second person observe while one person performs the power button sequence to help catch the fast-moving chevron icon.
Step 5: Connect to Wi-Fi
In the Hidden Dock, select the Wi-Fi option and connect your device to a valid, accessible Wi-Fi network using its SSID and credentials. Only the Wi-Fi configuration option is available from the Hidden Dock—no other device settings are accessible here.
Step 6: Verify the connection
Confirm that your device shows a connected network indicator on-screen.
Step 7: Check your device status in the Esper Console
Return to the Esper Console and navigate to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Device Details. Your device status should change from Offline to Online.
Step 8: Test connectivity
Issue a Ping command from the Esper Console by navigating to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Actions → Ping. Confirm that you receive a successful response. Any queued commands should now begin executing.
Step 9: Fix the Blueprint configuration
Once your device is back online, ensure your Blueprint no longer contains the erroneous Wi-Fi entry. If needed, force a Blueprint re-convergence by navigating to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Blueprint → Apply.
Troubleshooting
The chevron icon is too fast to tap: Practice the timing by having another person watch the screen while you perform the power button sequence. Focus on the screen edges immediately after unlocking.
The Hidden Dock does not appear at all: Confirm that the Esper Agent is still running on your device—you should see the Esper-managed launcher or permitted apps on screen. If your device appears unresponsive or stuck in a crash loop, the issue may require a factory reset.
