Cannot type spaces anywhere in Esper Console — browser/keyboard input issue on confirmation dialogs
Android
If you're unable to type spaces in the Esper Console web interface—including in confirmation dialogs like the "REMOVE DEVICE" confirmation—this article will help you diagnose and resolve the issue.
Immediate workaround
If you need to complete an action right away, you can use copy-paste instead of typing:
- Copy the required text (for example,
REMOVE DEVICE) from the dialog label or another source. - Click in the confirmation field.
- Paste the text using Ctrl+V (Windows) or Cmd+V (Mac).
- Proceed with your action.
This bypasses the spacebar input requirement entirely and allows you to complete your task while you troubleshoot the underlying issue.
Step 1: Test in Incognito mode
Browser extensions can interfere with keyboard input. Test whether the spacebar works in a private browsing session:
- Open Chrome Incognito mode by pressing Ctrl+Shift+N (Windows) or Cmd+Shift+N (Mac).
- Navigate to the Esper Console.
- Try typing a space in any text field.
If the spacebar works in Incognito mode, a browser extension is likely interfering. Continue to Step 2. If the spacebar still doesn't work, skip to Step 3.
Step 2: Disable browser extensions
If you confirmed that Incognito mode works, identify which extension is causing the issue:
- Navigate to
chrome://extensions. - Disable all extensions by toggling each one off.
- Return to the Esper Console and test the spacebar again.
- If the spacebar now works, re-enable extensions one at a time and test after each one. The extension that breaks the spacebar is your culprit.
- Either disable that extension permanently or contact the extension's developer for an update.
Step 3: Clear your browser cache
Cached files from a previous Console version can cause keyboard behavior issues. Force a full cache refresh:
- Navigate to the Esper Console.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+R (Windows) or Cmd+Shift+R (Mac) to perform a hard refresh.
- Try typing a space in any text field.
If the issue persists, clear all site data:
- Open Chrome menu → Settings → Privacy and security → Clear browsing data.
- Check both Cached images and files and Cookies and other site data.
- Click Clear data.
- Close Chrome completely and reopen it.
- Navigate to the Esper Console and test the spacebar again.
Step 4: Test in a different browser
If the issue persists after clearing your cache, test whether the problem is specific to Chrome:
- Open the Esper Console in Microsoft Edge or Firefox.
- Try typing a space in any text field.
If the spacebar works in another browser, the issue is Chrome-specific. Note your Chrome version by navigating to chrome://settings/help and include this information if you contact Esper Support.
Verify the fix
After applying any of the above steps, confirm that the issue is resolved:
- Navigate to Devices & Groups.
- Select an affected device.
- Initiate a Remove Device action.
- Attempt to type
REMOVE DEVICE(with a space) into the confirmation field. - Confirm that the action proceeds successfully.
Still need help?
If the spacebar remains non-functional across multiple browsers and in Incognito mode, the issue may be caused by a Console regression rather than your browser or extensions. Contact Esper Support and provide the following information:
- Your Chrome version (from
chrome://settings/help) - Your operating system version
- Whether the issue occurs in Incognito mode and in other browsers
- Any JavaScript errors in your browser console (press F12, click the Console tab, and note any errors that appear when you try to press the spacebar)
