When managing iOS devices in Esper, location tracking is only available when a device is placed into Lost Mode. Continuous background tracking, real-time geofencing, and location history are not available for iOS devices.

Why this happens

Apple's MDM framework restricts third-party device management platforms, including Esper, from accessing background location data. This is a platform-level constraint enforced by Apple — not a configuration issue or an Esper limitation that can be worked around.

What Lost Mode location tracking does and does not do

Reports the device's current GPS coordinates at the moment Lost Mode is activated
Does not provide continuous or historical location data
Is visible to the end user — Lost Mode is not a silent background operation
Requires the device to have an active internet connection and location services enabled

How to locate an iOS device using Lost Mode

In the Esper Console, go to Devices & Groups and select the iOS device you need to locate.
Open the device detail view and enable Lost Mode. This pushes a command to the device that locks it and triggers a location report.
Wait for the device to respond. The current GPS coordinates will appear on the device detail page once the device checks in.
When the device is recovered, return to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] and disable Lost Mode to return the device to normal operation.

Verify: After enabling Lost Mode, the device detail page should display the device's GPS coordinates within a few minutes, provided the device has an active internet connection and location services are turned on.

If the location does not appear after enabling Lost Mode

Check the following before contacting support:

Confirm the device has an active internet connection — Lost Mode cannot report a location if the device is offline.
Confirm that location services are enabled on the device under the iOS system settings.
Check the Activity Feed on the device detail page to confirm the Lost Mode command was received and acknowledged by the device.

If you need continuous location tracking

Continuous real-time location tracking and geofencing are not available for iOS through Esper. Depending on your use case, consider the following alternatives:

Android devices: Esper supports continuous location tracking and geofencing natively for Android. If your fleet includes both platforms, geofencing policies can be applied to Android devices.
Third-party apps on iOS: A location tracking app distributed through the Esper app catalog may provide additional capabilities, subject to Apple's app permission model and user consent requirements.

If this doesn't resolve it

If Lost Mode is enabled but no location appears after several minutes, and you have confirmed the device is online with location services active, contact Esper Support. When you reach out, include the device serial number, the timestamp when Lost Mode was enabled, and a screenshot of the Activity Feed showing the command status.
