Android Settings icon appears twice on home screen after Blueprint update: remove duplicate Settings package reference
Android
If you see the Android Settings icon appear twice on your device's home screen after updating a Blueprint, this is typically caused by conflicting configuration settings in the Blueprint itself. Follow these steps to resolve the duplicate icon.
Before you begin
Check whether a Converge operation is failing on your device. If you see an error message like System update policy 'Disable Updates' is not compatible on this device, you must resolve this first before proceeding.
Step 1: Fix the System Update Policy (if Converge is failing)
- In the Esper Console, go to Blueprints → [Your Blueprint Name] → Compliance Policy / Device Settings → System Update Policy.
- Change the System Update Policy from
Disable Updatesto a compatible setting such asAutomatic,Windowed, orPostpone. - Click Save.
Step 2: Remove the duplicate Android Settings entry
- Go to Blueprints → [Your Blueprint Name] → Apps.
- Locate the
Android Settingsorcom.android.settingspackage entry in the app list. - Remove this entry entirely from the app list.
- Click Save.
Why: The duplicate icon occurs because Android Settings is being controlled by two separate Blueprint configurations at the same time. Removing the manual app entry ensures it's controlled only by the dedicated Settings toggle.
Step 3: Verify your Android Settings toggle
- In the same Blueprint, navigate to the device or home screen settings section.
- Find the dedicated Android Settings toggle.
- Confirm this toggle is set to your desired state (enabled to show the icon, or disabled to hide it).
- Click Save.
Step 4: Apply the changes with Converge
- Go to Devices & Groups → [Your Device or Group] → Actions → Converge.
- Wait for the Converge operation to complete.
- Check your device's activity feed to confirm the operation completed successfully with no errors.
- On the device itself, verify that the Android Settings icon now appears only once on the home screen.
Troubleshooting
The duplicate icon still appears after Converge completes successfully:
- Check whether another Blueprint or group-level policy is independently managing the
com.android.settingspackage. Verify that only one Blueprint is controlling this app.
Converge continues to fail with the System Update Policy error:
- Verify your device's Android OS version and hardware model. Some OEM devices do not support all Esper System Update Policy modes.
- Try setting the policy to
Automatic, which is the most widely compatible option.
