Wi-Fi networks not showing in Esper Settings: enable Location in Device Hardware Settings on console
Android
If Wi-Fi networks aren't showing in the Esper Settings app on your device, you may need to enable Location in the Device Hardware Settings on the Esper Console. This article walks you through the fix.
Before you begin
This issue typically occurs on Android 10 and above. Android requires Location services to be active before the device can scan for Wi-Fi networks. Even if you enabled Location during device setup, you need to explicitly enable it in the Esper Console's hardware controls for Wi-Fi scanning to work.
How to enable Location in Device Hardware Settings
- In the Esper Console, go to Devices & Groups → [Your Device Name].
- Open the Settings or Hardware Settings section for the device.
- Find the Location toggle and set it to Enabled.
- Save or apply the change.
- Wait a few minutes for the device to converge and receive the new settings.
- On your device, open Esper Settings → Wi-Fi and verify that available networks now appear.
If Wi-Fi networks still don't appear
Try these troubleshooting steps:
- Check device convergence: In the Esper Console, verify the device's last sync timestamp. Make sure it has fully converged after you enabled Location.
- Restart the device: After confirming Location is enabled, restart your device and wait 2–3 minutes before checking the Wi-Fi screen again.
- Verify Wi-Fi access points: Confirm that the Wi-Fi access points have been correctly added to your device or group configuration in the Esper Console.
- Collect device information: If Location is enabled and the device has converged but Wi-Fi scanning still fails, note your device model, Android OS version, and Esper Agent version. Then request a bug report by going to Devices & Groups → [Your Device Name] → Actions → Request Bug Report.
Why this happens
On Android 10 and above, the operating system requires Location services to be active before the device can use Wi-Fi scanning APIs. The Esper Console has a separate Location hardware control that must be enabled independently from any Location settings you may have configured on the device itself. If the Location toggle in the Esper Console is not explicitly enabled, Wi-Fi scanning will fail even if Location is turned on elsewhere.
