Wi-Fi does not auto-reconnect after reboot on All-in-One devices: weak 5 GHz signal causes Android to fail reconnection
Android
Title: Wi-Fi won't auto-reconnect after reboot — improve signal strength or switch bandsWhen an M1 10.1 All-in-One device is rebooted, it may fail to automatically reconnect to a saved Wi-Fi network, leaving the device offline and requiring manual reconnection through the Wi-Fi settings overlay on every restart.
Why this happens
Android's network selection logic applies a minimum signal threshold during startup. On the 5 GHz band, a signal weaker than approximately −78 dBm falls below this threshold, so Android skips the network entirely — even though the credentials are valid and the network is saved on the device. The issue does not appear during manual reconnection because that bypass the startup filter.
Before you start
Check the current signal strength at the device's physical location before making any changes:
- Open the Esper Console and navigate to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Details.
- Locate the Wi-Fi section and note the RSSI value shown for the connected or nearby network.
- If the RSSI is approximately −78 dBm or lower on a 5 GHz network, weak signal is the likely cause. Continue with the steps below.
Steps
-
Improve the signal strength at the device's location. This is the primary fix. Try one or more of the following:
- Move the access point closer to the device, or reposition the device to reduce walls, metal surfaces, or other obstructions between it and the access point.
- Add a Wi-Fi extender or mesh node to increase coverage at the device's location.
- Target a signal strength of −65 dBm or better on 5 GHz for reliable automatic reconnection after reboot.
-
Switch the device to the 2.4 GHz band if improving 5 GHz coverage is not practical. The 2.4 GHz band has greater range and is less susceptible to signal degradation over distance. If your router broadcasts separate SSIDs for each band, connect the device to the 2.4 GHz SSID. A target of −70 dBm or better is recommended on 2.4 GHz.
- Open the Wi-Fi settings overlay on the device by tapping the top-right corner of the screen six times.
- Select the 2.4 GHz SSID and enter credentials if prompted.
- Confirm the network is saved before proceeding.
-
Provision Wi-Fi credentials via a Blueprint to ensure consistent deployment across devices. This step is recommended when managing multiple devices and does not replace adequate signal strength — it ensures credentials are correctly applied at scale.
- In the Esper Console, navigate to Blueprints → [Blueprint Name] → Network → Wi-Fi Access Points.
- Add the target SSID and credentials.
- Save the blueprint and apply it to the relevant device or device group.
- Reboot the device to confirm the fix. In the Esper Console, navigate to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Actions and select Reboot. Wait 60–90 seconds for the device to complete startup and attempt reconnection.
Verify: After the reboot completes, the device tile in Devices & Groups should show a status of Online within 90 seconds, without any manual intervention at the device. If the device comes online automatically on two or more consecutive reboots, the issue is resolved.
If this doesn't resolve it
If the device still fails to auto-reconnect after confirming signal strength meets the recommended thresholds, collect the following before contacting support:
- The RSSI value shown in Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Details at the time of the failed reconnection.
- The Wi-Fi band and SSID the device is configured to use.
- The Activity Feed entries from the reboot window: Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Activity Feed.
- The device serial number and firmware version, visible under Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Details.
Contact Esper Support with this information so the issue can be investigated further.
Still need help?
If you're still experiencing Wi-Fi reconnection issues after reboot on your All-in-One devices, submit a support ticket and include your device's Wi-Fi signal strength readings, router 5 GHz band settings, and device reboot logs.
