Google Play managed app update delay: enable High Priority Update Mode in Blueprint
Android
If your managed devices aren't installing the latest version of an app from Google Play, even after you've published a new release with a 100% rollout, you can force faster updates by enabling High Priority Update Mode in your Blueprint.
Why app updates are delayed
Google Play controls when devices receive app updates. Even after you complete a 100% rollout, devices don't fetch updates instantly. Instead, they poll Google Play servers on their own schedule—typically every 24 hours or during a maintenance window. To speed up delivery, you need to tell Google Play to prioritize the update.
Enable High Priority Update Mode
- In the Esper Console, go to Blueprints and open the Blueprint applied to your device group.
- Navigate to Apps & Configuration → App List.
- Find the Google Play app you want to update and select it to open its settings.
- Set Update Mode to High Priority.
- Save and publish your Blueprint changes.
- Apply the updated Blueprint to your device group: Devices & Groups → [your group] → Blueprint → Apply.
Once devices reconnect to the internet, they will install the new app version. You can verify the update by checking Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Apps.
Quick workaround for a single device
If one device needs an immediate update without waiting for the next poll cycle:
- Go to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Apps.
- Select the app and choose Uninstall.
- Reinstall the app. It will fetch the latest version from Google Play.
Before you apply this fix
Verify the following:
- The new app version is fully promoted to 100% rollout in Google Play Console, not in a staged rollout state.
- Your device has an active internet connection and is not offline in the Esper Console.
- The Blueprint is actively applied to the device with no pending convergence errors. Check Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Blueprint → Status.
Important notes about High Priority Mode
- No guaranteed timing: Google doesn't provide an SLA for update delivery, even with High Priority enabled. This mode tells Google to prioritize the update, but delivery time depends on Google's infrastructure.
- Battery and data impact: Devices will update immediately on connection instead of waiting for a charging or Wi-Fi maintenance window. For large apps on metered connections, consider the impact on your users.
- Per-app configuration: Update Mode must be set individually for each app in your Blueprint. Changing one app's setting doesn't affect others.
- Blueprint re-apply required: The updated Blueprint must be pushed and converged on devices before the change takes effect.
