Blank/invisible notifications with audio alerts on Esper-managed kiosk devices: mute notification volume via Blueprint Sound Settings
Android
If your Esper-managed kiosk device is playing notification sounds with no visible notification banner, this is typically caused by the Esper Helper application triggering audio alerts on the system notification channel. You can resolve this by muting the notification volume through Blueprint Sound Settings, which will apply the fix consistently across your fleet.
Before you begin
This solution is appropriate for single-app kiosk deployments where your kiosk application does not rely on the Android notification channel for its own audio feedback. If your kiosk app uses notification channels for audio alerts, muting system notification volume will also silence those alerts. Confirm with your app developer which audio channels your app uses (notification, media, or alarm) before proceeding.
How to mute notification volume via Blueprint
- In the Esper Console, navigate to Blueprints and open the Blueprint applied to your device group.
- Locate the Sound or Device Settings → Sound section within the Blueprint configuration.
- Set Notification Volume to
0(muted). - Save and publish the updated Blueprint.
- Apply the Blueprint to your target device or group: Devices & Groups → [Device or Group Name] → Blueprint → Apply.
Verify the fix
- Wait for the Blueprint to converge on the device. Check convergence status at Devices & Groups → [Device] → Blueprint Status.
- On the device, open Settings → Sound and confirm notification volume is set to 0.
- Monitor the device for several hours to confirm no phantom audio alerts occur.
What if this doesn't work?
- Notification sounds persist after muting: Confirm the Blueprint has fully converged on the device and that no conflicting Blueprint is applied at a higher group level.
- You need per-app sound control: If you want to mute only the Esper Helper app while preserving notification sounds for your kiosk application, this cannot currently be achieved through Blueprint settings alone. Contact Esper Support to discuss whether per-app notification channel management is available for your use case.
- Sounds continue from a different source: If the sounds persist after you've muted notification volume, they may be originating from a different package. Contact Esper Support with details about when the sounds occur, and we can help identify the source.
Quick manual fix (single device only)
If you need an immediate workaround for a single device before applying a Blueprint to your fleet, you can manually mute the Esper Helper app on the device:
- On the device, open Settings → Sound.
- Locate the notification volume control and set it to 0.
This will stop the phantom alert sounds immediately, but you will need to repeat this step manually for each device. Using Blueprint Sound Settings (above) is the recommended approach for managing multiple devices.
