Managed app configuration stuck on devices despite no config visible in Blueprint: clear config from Managed Google Play settings
Android
When a managed app configuration continues to apply to devices even though no configuration is visible in the Blueprint, the app may have a separate configuration set at the Managed Google Play tenant level that overrides or persists independently of Blueprint settings.
Why this happens
Managed app configurations can be stored in two independent locations in the Esper Console: at the Blueprint level and at the Managed Google Play tenant level. If a configuration exists in either location, it is applied to devices. Clearing one location does not automatically clear the other, so the configuration continues to be enforced even when the Blueprint appears empty.
Clear the Managed Google Play tenant-level configuration
- Navigate to Apps → Managed Google Play in the Esper Console.
- Locate the app with the unwanted configuration and open its settings.
- Find the managed configuration fields. These fields are editable even if they appear read-only — click directly into each field to activate it.
- Delete all values from every managed configuration field. Leaving any field populated will continue to push that value to devices.
- Click Save.
Clear the Blueprint-level configuration
- Navigate to Blueprints → [Blueprint Name] → Apps & Configuration.
- Locate the same app and open its managed configuration settings.
- Remove all configuration values and save the blueprint.
- Navigate to Devices & Groups, select the affected devices or group, and trigger a reconverge to push the updated blueprint immediately rather than waiting for the next scheduled check-in.
Verify
Verify: Navigate to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Apps → [App Name] and confirm no managed configuration values are listed. On the device itself, open the app and confirm it is no longer enforcing the previous configuration. Changes should reflect within 5 minutes of a successful reconverge.
If this doesn't resolve it
If the managed app configuration persists after clearing both locations and triggering a reconverge, check the following before contacting support:
- Confirm that the device belongs to a group that does not have a separate Blueprint applying the same configuration.
- Check Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Activity Feed to confirm the reconverge completed successfully and no errors were logged.
- Verify the device is online and the Esper Agent is active.
If the issue persists, contact Esper Support with the following information:
- Tenant name
- Affected device serial numbers
- Screenshots showing both the Managed Google Play configuration screen and the Blueprint Apps & Configuration screen with all fields cleared
- Activity Feed entries from the affected devices covering the time of the reconverge attempt
Still need help?
If clearing the managed app configuration from Managed Google Play settings doesn't resolve the issue, submit a support ticket and include the device serial number(s), the specific app affected, and details about the configuration that remains stuck.
