Bulk Device Removal (Factory Reset + Wipe External Storage) via Group Selection in Esper Console
Android
Improved title: Bulk-remove devices from Esper Console with optional factory resetWhen you need to remove multiple Android devices from Esper at once, the Esper Console lets you select an entire group of devices and remove them in a single operation — with the choice to also factory reset each device and wipe its external storage.
Why this happens
Device removal in Esper is deliberately separated from physical device reset. Removing a device from the Esper Console unregisters it from your tenant but leaves the Esper Agent and its configuration intact on the hardware. Triggering a factory reset goes further and returns the device to its out-of-box state, erasing all data. Because these are distinct actions with different consequences, they are controlled by separate checkboxes in the same confirmation dialog.
Before you start
- Confirm your account has the Owner or Device Manager role. Accounts with lesser permissions will not see the remove option in the Actions menu.
- Decide which removal type you need — see the two options below.
- If you intend to factory reset devices, confirm all target devices are online before proceeding. Factory reset commands require an active connection and cannot be queued for offline devices.
Option 1: Remove devices from the Esper Console only
Use this option to unregister devices from your tenant while leaving the Esper Agent and its configuration on the physical hardware. This is the correct choice for offline devices or when you plan to re-enroll devices under a different tenant.
- Open the Esper Console and navigate to Devices & Groups.
- Select the group that contains the devices you want to remove.
- Use the checkboxes to select each target device, or use the bulk-select checkbox at the top of the list to select all devices in the group at once.
- Click Actions → Remove Device(s).
- In the confirmation dialog, leave both checkboxes unchecked:
- Factory Reset
- Wipe External Storage
- Confirm the removal.
Option 2: Remove devices and perform a full factory reset
Use this option to unregister devices from the Esper Console and wipe them back to factory state. This action is irreversible — all apps, data, and configuration on the device and any attached external storage will be permanently erased.
- Confirm every target device shows a status of Online in Devices & Groups. Devices that are offline will not receive the factory reset command.
- Select the group that contains the devices you want to remove.
- Use the checkboxes to select each target device, or use the bulk-select checkbox to select all devices in the group.
- Click Actions → Remove Device(s).
- In the confirmation dialog, check both options:
- Factory Reset
- Wipe External Storage
- Confirm the removal. Each device will receive the factory reset command and reboot into its out-of-box state.
Troubleshooting
Devices still appear in the Console after removal
Refresh the page. If the devices still appear, confirm the removal dialog was fully submitted — navigating away before confirming cancels the operation.
Factory reset did not trigger on some devices
The factory reset command requires the device to be online at the moment the command is sent. Check the Activity Feed for each affected device to confirm whether the command was delivered. Bring those devices online and repeat Option 2 for them individually, or use Option 1 to remove them from the Console without a reset.
Bulk-select checkbox is not available
Bulk selection only works when viewing devices within a group context. Navigate to Devices & Groups, select a specific group, and the bulk-select checkbox will appear at the top of the device list. It is not available in the flat all-devices view.
Actions menu does not show Remove Device(s)
Verify that your account role is Owner or Device Manager by going to Company Settings → User Management and checking your assigned role. Viewer and Operator roles do not have device removal permissions.
If this doesn't resolve it
If devices remain stuck in the Console after following the steps above, or the Actions menu is missing options your role should allow, contact Esper Support. Include the following when you reach out:
- The device IDs or serial numbers of affected devices
- A screenshot of the confirmation dialog and the Actions menu
- Your account email and tenant name
- The relevant entries from the Activity Feed for each affected device
