Kiosk Mode Device Shows Native Lock Screen on Startup — Factory Reset Recovery
Android
Title: Kiosk mode device shows Android lock screen on startup — factory reset recoveryWhen a device enrolled in Kiosk Mode displays the native Android lock screen on startup and the lock screen cannot be dismissed, the device is inaccessible and cannot be remotely managed until it is recovered.
Why this happens
In rare cases, a device reboot can cause Android to surface its native lock screen before the Esper Agent has fully initialized and suppressed it. If the device also loses network connectivity at that moment, the Esper Agent cannot receive remote commands to clear the lock screen, leaving the device in an unrecoverable state without physical intervention.
Before you begin
Check the Esper Console before touching the device. Navigate to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Overview and confirm:
- The device status is Offline
- Kiosk Mode is active
- No lock screen password is configured in the applied blueprint
If a lock screen password appears in the blueprint that your team did not set, stop here and contact Esper Support before proceeding — this may indicate an unauthorized configuration change.
Steps
- Attempt to reconnect the device to the network. Pull down the notification shade on the device and enable Wi-Fi or mobile data. If the device comes online, check Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Overview in the Esper Console — the Esper Agent may be able to suppress the lock screen automatically once it has a connection. If the lock screen is blocking access to the notification shade entirely, skip to step 2.
-
Boot the device into recovery mode using the hardware key combination. The exact combination varies by manufacturer — use the appropriate method below:
- Samsung: Power off the device, then hold Volume Up + Power simultaneously until the recovery menu appears. Select Wipe data / Factory reset. If the hardware key combination is unresponsive, use Samsung Odin to flash the stock firmware instead.
- All other manufacturers: Consult your device manufacturer's documentation for the recovery mode key combination. Locate the Wipe data / Factory reset option and confirm the reset.
-
Re-provision the device using your organization's standard Esper enrollment method. Supported methods include:
- QR code provisioning
- Zero-Touch Enrollment
- Knox Mobile Enrollment (KME)
- Reapply the blueprint to restore the device's configuration. Once the device appears online in the Esper Console, navigate to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Blueprint → Apply, select the appropriate blueprint for this device, and confirm. This restores Kiosk Mode, app configuration, and all other managed settings.
Verify
Verify: Within 5 minutes of applying the blueprint, the device should show Online in Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Overview, Kiosk Mode should be active, the native Android lock screen should not appear, and the kiosk application should be running in the foreground. Confirm all four conditions before returning the device to use.
If this doesn't resolve it
If the device does not respond to the hardware key combination and cannot be factory reset, contact your internal IT or hardware team for physical inspection or OEM warranty service.
If the native lock screen recurs on the same device or across multiple devices after re-provisioning, contact Esper Support and include the following information:
- Device serial number and Esper device ID (found in Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Overview)
- Esper Agent version
- Device make, model, and Android OS version
- Timestamp of when the lock screen first appeared
- Whether a SIM card with PIN enforcement is installed
- Whether any OEM firmware updates were applied automatically before the issue occurred
