OS Update Dialog Appears Outside Scheduled Maintenance Window When Android Settings App Is Hidden
Android
Title: OS update dialog appears outside maintenance window — show Android Settings appWhen the Android Settings app is hidden in a Blueprint, Android devices display OS update dialogs to the end user even during a configured maintenance window, interrupting the kiosk experience.
Why this happens
When the Android Settings app visibility is set to Hide in a Blueprint, the system update process cannot access the settings it needs to complete the update silently in the background. Because it cannot finish the update automatically, Android surfaces the update dialog directly to the user. Setting Android Settings to Show gives the system process the access it needs — the app remains invisible to end users in Kiosk Mode, but the update can run unattended.
Steps
- Open the Esper Console and navigate to Blueprints. Open the blueprint applied to your affected device.
- Go to the Apps section of the blueprint and locate Android Settings in the app list.
- Change the visibility state from Hide to Show. This does not expose Android Settings to end users in Kiosk Mode — the kiosk launcher continues to hide it, but the system update process can now access it.
- Save and publish the updated blueprint.
- Navigate to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Blueprints and apply the updated blueprint to the affected device.
- If the device has a pending update that appears stuck, restart the device so it can re-evaluate its update state before the next maintenance window.
- Confirm your maintenance window is configured correctly by opening Blueprints → [Blueprint Name] → System Updates → Maintenance Window and verifying the scheduled times.
Verify: During the next scheduled maintenance window, the device should complete the OS update silently with no dialog shown to the end user. Check Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Activity Feed to confirm the update event is recorded at the expected time.
If this doesn't resolve it
If update dialogs continue to appear after applying the blueprint change, check Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Device Info to confirm the Android OS version and OTA update state on the device. If only one device in a group is affected, it may be on a different OS version or have a unique pending OTA state — the fix applies equally once the blueprint is pushed.
If the issue persists, contact Esper Support with the following information:
- Device name and device ID
- Blueprint name and a screenshot of the System Updates and Maintenance Window configuration
- Android OS version running on the affected device
- A screenshot or description of the update dialog being shown
