QR Code provisioning fails on Samsung Galaxy A9+ (no model-specific support): use AFW/EMM Token method instead
Android
If your Samsung Galaxy A9+ device fails to provision using QR code, you can successfully provision it using the AFW/EMM Token method instead. This guide walks you through the alternative provisioning process.
Before you begin
The Samsung Galaxy A9+ may not reliably support QR code provisioning due to firmware differences from the standard Galaxy A9. Before attempting the AFW/EMM Token method, confirm the following:
- You have the device's hardware serial number (found in Settings → About Phone → Serial Number or printed on the device)
- You have access to the Esper Console
- The device has a stable internet connection available
- You are prepared to perform a full factory reset on the device
Step 1: Add the device to Seamless Provisioning
- In the Esper Console, navigate to Provisioning Methods → Seamless Provisioning
- Add the device's hardware serial number to the allowlist
Step 2: Factory reset the device
Perform a full factory reset on the Galaxy A9+. A fresh device state is required for successful provisioning.
Step 3: Power on and reach the Google sign-in screen
- Power on the device
- Proceed through the out-of-box setup wizard
- Continue until you see the Google sign-in screen
Step 4: Enter the EMM Token username
- At the Google sign-in screen, enter
afw#esperas the username/email - This triggers EMM Token provisioning
Step 5: Complete provisioning
- Follow the on-screen prompts to install the Esper Agent
- Complete device enrollment
Step 6: Verify successful enrollment
Confirm the device appears in the Esper Console under Devices & Groups with a status of Active and the correct Blueprint applied.
Troubleshooting
If provisioning still fails, check the following:
- Verify the hardware serial number in Seamless Provisioning exactly matches the serial number on the device or in Settings → About Phone → Serial Number
- Confirm the device has a stable internet connection throughout provisioning
- Check that the Google account has not been previously enrolled under a different MDM — a Google-level device lock (FRP lock) may block provisioning
- If the device is Zero-Touch eligible, attempt Zero-Touch Enrollment as an alternative
