Play Store error "This device is not managed by Google Play services": reinitialize AFW managed account via Blueprint toggle
Android
If you see the error "This device is not managed by Google Play services" when trying to install apps from Google Play Store, the Android for Work managed account on your device may need to be reinitialized. This article walks you through the fix.
Before you begin
- You need access to the Esper Console and the affected device.
- Confirm the device is GMS-certified and has Google Play Protect enabled by checking Settings → Security → Google Play Protect on the device.
- If multiple devices of the same model are showing this error, contact Esper Support instead—this may indicate a platform-level issue.
How to fix the managed Google Play account
- In the Esper Console, go to Blueprints and find the Blueprint currently applied to the affected device.
- Clone the Blueprint using the Clone option. This ensures you don't affect other devices using the same Blueprint.
- Open the cloned Blueprint and navigate to Platform Services.
- Disable the Control Managed Google Play Services toggle and save the Blueprint.
- Apply the modified Blueprint to the affected device only: Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Blueprint → Apply.
- Wait for the Blueprint to converge on the device.
- Re-enable the Control Managed Google Play Services toggle in the Blueprint and save.
- Apply the Blueprint to the device again.
- On the device, open the Google Play Store and confirm a managed Google account now appears.
- Try installing the app that previously failed and verify it succeeds.
If the error persists
- Check that a managed Google account actually appears in the Play Store after applying the Blueprint changes. If not, the Android for Work account binding may require a full device re-provisioning.
- If the issue recurs after the fix works, gather these details and contact Esper Support: (a) Esper Agent logs from the device, (b) the provisioning method you used (QR code, ZeroTouch, or KME), and (c) the Esper Agent version on the device.
Still need help?
If you've tried these steps and the issue continues, submit a support ticket and include your device serial number, the Esper Agent version, and the provisioning method you used.
