App shows "This app requires a WebView to work" error: verify and restore Android System WebView
Android
If an app displays the error "This app requires a WebView to work," Android System WebView may be disabled or missing from your device. Follow these steps to verify and restore this essential Android component.
Before you begin
You'll need to access your device either through Esper's Remote View feature or have the device physically available. Make sure you have console access to enable ADB on the device.
Step 1: Enable ADB on your device
- In the Esper Console, go to Devices & Groups → [Your Device Name] → Settings → ADB.
- Click Enable and then Apply Changes.
- Wait for the setting to sync to your device before proceeding to the next step.
Step 2: Enable Developer Options on your device
- On your device, open Settings → About Tablet → Software Information.
- Tap the Build Number field seven times. You'll see a message confirming that Developer Options is now enabled.
- If this action is blocked by your device's security policy, proceed to Step 3 to adjust your settings.
Step 3: Allow access to Android Settings (if needed)
If Step 2 was blocked, you may need to temporarily adjust your device's security policy:
- In the Esper Console, go to Blueprints → [Your Blueprint Name] → Device Settings.
- Find the option Allow Access to Android Settings and enable it.
- Apply the Blueprint to your device by navigating to Devices & Groups → [Your Device Name] → Blueprint and selecting your updated Blueprint.
- Wait for the policy to sync before returning to Step 2.
Step 4: Check WebView in Developer Options
- On your device, open Settings → Developer Options.
- Look for any of these entries:
- WebView Implementation
- WebView Provider
- Android System WebView
- If none of these entries appear, WebView is missing or disabled on your device. Continue to Step 5.
Step 5: Verify and enable WebView in your Apps
- On your device, open Settings → Apps.
- Tap the menu icon (three dots) and select Show System Apps.
- Find and tap Android System WebView.
- If the app shows a status of Disabled, tap Enable.
- If Android System WebView does not appear in your app list at all, your system partition may be corrupted. See the troubleshooting section below.
Step 6: Test the app
- Open the app that was previously showing the WebView error.
- If the app now launches successfully, WebView has been restored.
- You can now reapply your production security policy in the Esper Console if you made temporary changes in Step 3.
Troubleshooting
Android System WebView is completely missing from your app list
If WebView does not appear in your Apps list at all (rather than being listed as disabled), your device's system partition may be corrupted or the package was removed outside of normal management. Your device may require a factory reset:
- In the Esper Console, go to Devices & Groups → [Your Device Name] → Actions → Wipe.
- Confirm the action. This will reset your device to its original state and restore system components like WebView.
- After the wipe completes, the device will be ready to use again.
You cannot access Developer Options
If you see an error like "I do not have permissions to perform this action" when trying to enable Developer Options, your device's security policy is blocking access. Return to Step 3 and ensure that Allow Access to Android Settings is enabled in your Blueprint. Wait for the policy to sync to your device, then try again.
ADB is not appearing in device settings
Confirm that ADB is enabled in your device's Esper settings by checking Devices & Groups → [Your Device Name] → Settings → ADB. Verify that the setting shows Enabled and has been successfully applied to your device.
