Title: Moving devices between groups without applying a Blueprint

When you move a device to a different group in the Esper Console, you may expect the group's Blueprint to apply automatically. By default, group assignment and Blueprint application are separate actions — moving a device does not push a new Blueprint unless you explicitly trigger one.

Why this happens

Esper decouples group membership from Blueprint enforcement. A group holds devices and defines a Blueprint, but that Blueprint is only pushed when you choose to apply it — either manually or through a compliance action. This means you can reorganize devices across groups without disrupting their current configuration.

Move a device to a group without changing its Blueprint

1. Open the Esper Console and go to Devices & Groups.
2. Locate the device you want to move. Use the search bar or group filters to find it quickly.
3. Select the checkbox next to the device. To move multiple devices at once, test with a single device first to confirm the expected behavior before proceeding in bulk.
4. Click Move to Group from the action menu that appears at the top of the device list.
5. In the dialog that opens, select the destination group.
6. When prompted, select Move without applying Blueprint (or the equivalent option that does not mention pushing a Blueprint or enforcing compliance). This step is critical — choosing any option that references Blueprint application or compliance sync will overwrite the device's current configuration.
7. Click Confirm to complete the assignment.

Verify: Go to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Blueprint. The active Blueprint shown should be identical to the one applied before the move, with no new version listed. The device's group label will reflect the new group immediately.

Troubleshooting

• The "Move without applying Blueprint" option is not available: The destination group may have Blueprint enforcement configured at the group level, which requires all incoming devices to adopt the group's Blueprint. Review the group settings under Devices & Groups → [Group Name] → Blueprint, or contact your Esper administrator to adjust the enforcement policy before moving the device.
• A different Blueprint was applied after the move: Go to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Activity Feed to see a timestamped record of all Blueprint pushes and who triggered them. This will confirm whether the change happened during the move or was triggered separately.

If this doesn't resolve it

If the Blueprint option is missing, a Blueprint was applied unexpectedly, or you are unsure how group-level enforcement is configured in your environment, contact Esper Support. When you reach out, include the device serial number, the source and destination group names, and a screenshot of the move dialog or the Activity Feed entry showing the Blueprint change.
