Device removed from Esper without factory reset — settings locked, Esper agent fails to start on boot
Android
Title: Device shows "Esper failed to start" after removal — recover without factory reset accessWhen a device is removed from the Esper Console without first being factory reset, the device is left in a broken state: Esper policies remain enforced, Settings is locked, and the Esper Agent displays an "Esper failed to start" error on every boot. The device appears functional but is inaccessible to the user.
Why this happens
Removing a device using Remove Only in the Esper Console severs the management connection but leaves all Esper-enforced restrictions in place on the device. Without an active management connection, the Esper Agent cannot complete its startup sequence, and any lockdowns applied by the previous Blueprint — including Settings restrictions — remain active with no way to lift them remotely.
What you need before you start
- Physical access to the device
- The Esper Admin Settings password set when the device was originally enrolled
How to find the Admin Settings password
- Open the Esper Console and navigate to Devices & Groups.
- Select the affected device and open the Blueprint tab.
- Under Esper Settings App, locate the Admin Settings Password field and copy the value.
If the password is not visible or the device no longer appears in the Console, use the hardware factory reset method described below.
Recover using the Esper Hidden Dock
The Esper Hidden Dock is a built-in admin overlay on Esper-enrolled devices that remains accessible even when the rest of the UI is locked.
-
Wake the device and access the Hidden Dock using one of these methods:
- Rapidly tap the top-right corner of the screen multiple times in quick succession, or
- Press the power button 3–4 times rapidly
- Tap Esper Admin Settings in the Hidden Dock, then enter the Admin Settings password when prompted. This bypasses the standard Settings lockdown because the Hidden Dock operates outside the locked UI layer.
- Locate Factory Reset and tap it, then confirm. The device will wipe all data and reboot to factory defaults.
Recover using a hardware factory reset (if the Hidden Dock is inaccessible)
If the screen is unresponsive or the Hidden Dock gesture does not trigger, perform a hardware factory reset through Android recovery mode.
- Power off the device completely.
- Boot into recovery mode by pressing and holding the correct key combination for your device. The most common combinations are:
- Power + Volume Down (most Android devices)
- Power + Volume Up (some Samsung and other OEM models)
- Use the volume buttons to navigate to Wipe data / factory reset and press the power button to confirm.
- Select Reboot system now when the wipe completes.
How to prevent this in the future
Always use Wipe + Remove when decommissioning a device in Devices & Groups. This factory resets the device before removing it from management, ensuring no Esper policies remain. Use Remove Only exclusively when you intend to immediately re-enroll the same device and do not want its data wiped.
If this doesn't resolve it
If the device will not power on at all and shows no response to any button combination, the issue is likely hardware-related and outside the scope of Esper recovery. In that case, contact your device manufacturer about repair or replacement options.
If you have completed all steps above and the device still shows Esper restrictions after the factory reset, contact Esper Support with the following information:
- Device serial number and OEM model
- Screenshot of the error screen
- Name of the Esper Console enterprise the device was enrolled under
- Method used (Hidden Dock or hardware reset) and the exact point of failure
