iOS app install fails and Remote Viewer unavailable — device is unsupervised
iOS
When an iOS device enrolls via QR code without first being placed into Supervised Mode, app installations pushed from the Esper Console silently fail and Remote Viewer is unavailable.
Why this happens
Apple's device management framework reserves certain capabilities — including MDM-driven app installation and remote screen access — exclusively for supervised devices. Supervision must be established before enrollment using Apple Configurator on a Mac. A device enrolled while unsupervised cannot gain these capabilities without being wiped and re-enrolled in Supervised Mode.
Before you start
- A Mac with Apple Configurator 2 installed (free from the Mac App Store)
- A USB cable to connect the iOS device to the Mac
- Physical access to the device
Step 1: Confirm the device is unsupervised
- Open the Esper Console and navigate to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Device Info.
- Locate the Supervision Status field. If the value is
Unsupervised, continue with the steps below.
Step 2: Supervise the device and re-enroll
- Connect the iOS device to your Mac using a USB cable and open Apple Configurator 2. Apple Configurator is the only supported tool for establishing supervision — this is an Apple platform requirement.
- Follow the iOS Onboarding with Direct Profile / QR Code — Supervised Mode guide in the Esper Help Center to supervise the device. This process resets the device, so ensure any required data is backed up first.
- After supervision completes, re-enroll the device into Esper using the QR code enrollment flow as described in the same guide.
Step 3: Verify supervision status and re-apply the blueprint
- Return to the Esper Console and navigate to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Device Info. Confirm Supervision Status now shows
Supervisedbefore proceeding. - Navigate to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Blueprint and apply the appropriate blueprint to push your app and configuration settings to the device.
- Navigate to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Remote Viewer and initiate a session to confirm Remote Viewer is now accessible.
No Mac available
Apple Configurator 2 is Mac-only software and there is no alternative path to supervision. If your organization does not have access to a Mac, consider enrolling future devices through Apple Business Manager (ABM) combined with Esper's Zero-Touch Enrollment flow, which ensures devices arrive supervised from the factory without requiring Apple Configurator.
If this doesn't resolve it
If the error This action is not supported for unsupervised devices persists after confirmed supervision, or apps still fail to install:
- Confirm the apps in your blueprint are compatible with the iOS version running on the device.
- Check that the Esper Agent is up to date via Esper Software Updates in the Console.
- Capture a screenshot of the Device Info panel showing supervision status and the Activity Feed entries logged around the time of the failed install.
Contact Esper Support and include the device serial number, supervision status screenshot, and Activity Feed export.
Still need help?
If your device remains unsupervised after troubleshooting, please submit a support ticket and include your device serial number, OS version, and the specific error messages from the failed app installation and Remote Viewer attempts.
