Blueprint "Allow Wi-Fi = Disabled" re-enables Wi-Fi after 10 seconds when no alternative network is present: apply backend remote configuration to override safety mechanism
Android
When you disable Wi-Fi in a Blueprint, Esper includes a safety mechanism that automatically re-enables Wi-Fi after 10 seconds if your device has no other network connection (like cellular or Ethernet). This article explains why this happens and how to override this behavior if you need Wi-Fi to remain off permanently.
Why Wi-Fi re-enables after 10 seconds
Esper's safety mechanism requires your devices to maintain at least one active network connection at all times. This keeps your devices reachable and manageable through the Esper platform. When you disable Wi-Fi via Blueprint but your device has no cellular data or Ethernet connection, the Esper agent automatically re-enables Wi-Fi after 10 seconds to prevent your device from going offline.
This behavior is by design—it's not a bug or a configurable Blueprint setting.
When this happens
You'll see Wi-Fi re-enable itself automatically if:
- Your Blueprint has Allow Wi-Fi set to disabled
- Your device has no active cellular data connection
- Your device has no active Ethernet connection
How to override the safety mechanism
If you need Wi-Fi to remain off permanently even when no alternative network is available, Esper Support can apply a backend remote configuration to your device. This override is device-specific and cannot be configured through the Esper Console or Blueprint UI directly.
- Verify that your device truly has no active cellular or Ethernet connection.
- Confirm that keeping Wi-Fi off permanently is your intended use case, even if the device becomes temporarily unreachable.
-
Contact Esper Support with the following information:
- Your enterprise name
- Device ID(s) affected
- Confirmation that you need Wi-Fi to stay off even if the device loses reachability
- Once Esper Support applies the backend configuration, verify the fix by:
- Confirming your Blueprint still has Allow Wi-Fi set to disabled
- Observing that Wi-Fi does not re-enable itself after 10 seconds
- Checking device logs or reviewing the Wi-Fi state in Devices & Groups → Device Name → Device Info in the Esper Console
If Wi-Fi still re-enables after the fix
If the backend configuration doesn't resolve the issue, contact Esper Support again and include:
- Your device ID
- The reference ticket number from your initial request
- Your Esper Agent version (found in Devices & Groups → Device Name → Device Info → Esper Agent Version)
Important notes
- This safety mechanism exists to prevent devices from going offline and becoming unmanageable. It is not a bug.
- If your device has an active cellular or Ethernet connection, the Allow Wi-Fi = disabled setting works without requiring any backend changes.
- The backend remote configuration is applied at the device level. If you need this applied across multiple devices, coordinate with Esper Support on the appropriate scope.
