Selecting an app from Play Store throws an error: re-add EMM account via "Upgrade for Free" to resolve
Android
Title: Selecting an app in managed Google Play throws an error — re-enroll EMM accountWhen selecting an app from the managed Google Play Store in the Esper Console, an error appears and the app cannot be approved or pushed to devices.
Why this happens
The Esper Console connects to managed Google Play through an EMM (Enterprise Mobility Management) account binding. If that binding expires or falls into an invalid state, the Console can no longer communicate with Google Play, causing all app selections to fail. This is a Console-level issue and does not affect devices that are already enrolled or apps already installed on them.
Steps to resolve
- Navigate to the Play Store in the Esper Console. Go to Apps & Configuration → Play Store.
- Re-enroll the managed Google Play account. Click Upgrade for Free and follow the on-screen prompts to completion. This re-establishes the EMM account binding between Esper and Google Play without affecting your already-enrolled devices.
- Confirm the upgrade completed successfully. The page should return to the standard Play Store browsing view with no error banners visible.
- Attempt to select the app again. Return to Apps & Configuration → Play Store and search for the app you were trying to approve.
Verify: You should be able to select, approve, and push the app to devices without any error. App approvals and pushes to devices should resume immediately after re-enrollment completes.
If only one specific app fails
If all other apps work but a single app still fails to select, the problem is likely with that app rather than the EMM binding. Common causes include:
- The app is geo-restricted and unavailable in your region.
- The developer has not enabled distribution through managed Google Play (EMM).
- The app has been unpublished or removed from the Play Store.
Search for the app directly in the public Google Play Store to confirm it is publicly available, then verify with the app developer that managed distribution is enabled.
If this doesn't resolve it
If Upgrade for Free is not visible, the upgrade fails, or the error persists after re-enrollment, the managed Google Play binding may need to be fully removed and re-established. Attempting this without guidance can impact enrolled devices.
Contact Esper Support and include:
- Your tenant ID
- The exact error message displayed in the Console
- A HAR file captured while reproducing the error — see How to Capture a HAR File for instructions

If the steps above don't resolve the issue, submit a support ticket with your device model, Android version, Esper Agent version, and a description of what you've already tried — this helps the support team investigate without a follow-up.
