Offline device Wi-Fi change via Esper Settings secret gesture and Blueprint fallback configuration
Android
If your device is in kiosk mode and offline, you can regain access through a hidden settings gesture. You can also configure a fallback Wi-Fi network in your Blueprint so your device automatically reconnects if your primary network becomes unavailable.
Before you begin
This article applies if your device is:
- Enrolled in kiosk mode
- Offline or unable to connect to Wi-Fi
- Managed by Esper
How to access Esper Settings on a locked kiosk device
You can access Wi-Fi settings on your device without exiting kiosk mode by using a hidden tap gesture.
- On your device screen, locate the top-right corner of the kiosk display, just below the notification bar.
- Tap that corner 3 to 6 times in quick succession.
- The Esper Hidden Dock or Esper Settings overlay should appear.
- Navigate to Wi-Fi settings and connect to an available network (such as a mobile hotspot).
- In the Esper Console, go to Devices & Groups and verify that your device now shows Online status.
Tap gesture not working? Make sure your tap is landing in the very top-right corner of the visible kiosk content area, not the status bar itself. Try varying the tap count between 3 and 6 times, as some configurations require a specific number.
How to configure a fallback Wi-Fi network in your Blueprint
Set up a secondary Wi-Fi network so your device automatically reconnects if your primary network becomes unavailable. Your device will cycle through known networks until it finds one that works.
- In the Esper Console, go to Provisioning Methods → Blueprints.
- Select the Blueprint applied to your device group and click Edit Blueprint.
- Go to Connectivity → Wi-Fi access points.
- Add your primary Wi-Fi network:
- SSID
- Security Type (WPA2-PSK, WPA3, Open, etc.)
- Password
- Click Add another network and add your fallback Wi-Fi network (for example, a mobile hotspot):
- SSID
- Security Type
- Password
- Save your Wi-Fi configuration and click Publish or Update the Blueprint.
- In Devices & Groups, select your device(s) and trigger a Blueprint Sync to push the updated configuration.
- Verify that both SSIDs now appear in your device's known networks. Disconnect from the primary network to confirm your device automatically connects to the fallback SSID and returns to Online status.
Troubleshooting
The tap gesture is still not working after using the correct technique:
- Confirm you are tapping in the exact top-right corner, just below the notification bar
- Try different tap counts between 3 and 6, as some devices may require a specific number
- Some custom launchers may intercept taps; check with your administrator if a custom overlay is in use
The Blueprint Wi-Fi configuration is not applying to your device:
- Confirm your device is assigned to the correct Blueprint in Devices & Groups → Device Details → Blueprint
- Verify the Blueprint was published after you made the Wi-Fi changes
- If your device is offline, the Blueprint will apply once it reconnects
Your device remains offline with no physical access:
- If you cannot use the hidden gesture and no fallback network exists, you may need to perform a factory reset or establish a direct connection (SIM or ethernet)
- If remote recovery is not possible, contact Esper Support for additional options
