Bulk app version update across multiple Blueprints is not supported — use Group-level Install App action instead
Android
Title: Update an app version across device groups without changing BlueprintsWhen you need to roll out a new app version to devices across one or more groups, Esper does not provide a single action to update all Blueprints simultaneously — but you can push the new version directly to devices using the group-level Install App action without touching your existing Blueprint or Managed Configuration settings.
Why this happens
Blueprints store app version configurations independently of each other, so there is no cross-Blueprint bulk update mechanism. The group-level Install App action works around this by pushing the app binary directly to devices in a group, leaving your Blueprint definitions and any Managed Configuration (JSON) settings untouched.
Push the update to devices in a group
- Navigate to Devices & Groups in the Esper Console and select the group containing the devices that need the update.
- Click Actions → Install App. This action targets all devices currently in the group, including offline devices, which will receive the command once they reconnect.
- Select the app from the dropdown, then choose the target version.
- Click Install to dispatch the update.
- Repeat steps 1–4 for each additional group that needs the update.
Managed Configuration settings for the app are preserved throughout this process. The Install App action updates the app binary only — it does not modify your JSON configuration or any Blueprint definition.
Update your Blueprints to reflect the new version (optional)
The group-level install does not update your Blueprints. If newly provisioned devices should receive the new version, update each Blueprint manually:
- Go to Blueprints and open the target blueprint.
- Locate the app in the blueprint's app configuration section.
- Change the app version to the new version.
- Save and publish the blueprint.
- Repeat for each blueprint that provisions devices requiring this app.
Verify the update
Verify: Go to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Apps and confirm the installed version matches the version you selected in the Install App action. Online devices should reflect the update within a few minutes of dispatching the command. Offline devices will update as soon as they reconnect.
If this doesn't resolve it
Check the following before contacting support:
- Install App action is unavailable: Confirm your account has Group Admin role or higher. Role permissions are managed under Company Settings → User Management.
- Some devices did not update: Go to Devices & Groups, filter by the group, and check the online/offline status of affected devices. Offline devices will receive the command on reconnection — no further action is required.
- Managed Configuration was reset after the install: This is unexpected. Before contacting support, note the app name and version, the group name, and the approximate time the Install App action was dispatched.
If the issue persists, submit a support ticket with the app name and version, affected group name, device IDs, and a screenshot of the Apps tab showing the current installed version.
Still need help?
If the steps above don't resolve the issue, submit a support ticket with your device model, Android version, Esper Agent version, and a description of what you've already tried — this helps the support team investigate without a follow-up.
