Gmail "Create account" option missing on enrolled devices: expected MDM behavior
Android
When you try to add a Gmail account on an Esper-enrolled device, you may notice that the "Create account" option is missing. This is expected behavior for managed Android devices. This article explains why this happens and how to add Gmail accounts to your enrolled devices.
Why the "Create account" option is missing
Esper-enrolled devices operate in Device Owner mode, which is Android's enterprise management framework. In this mode, Android restricts direct account creation on the device as part of enterprise security policy. This is a platform-level restriction, not an Esper-specific setting, and applies to all Android MDM solutions.
The "Create account" option is only available on personal, non-managed devices. On managed devices, you must use pre-created accounts instead.
Before you begin
You'll need a Gmail account that already exists. If you don't have one yet, create it before attempting to add it to your managed device.
How to add an existing Gmail account to your device
- On your Esper-enrolled device, open Settings → Accounts → Add Account.
- Select Google.
- Enter the email address and password for your existing Gmail account.
- Complete the sign-in flow.
- Verify the account now appears under Settings → Accounts.
How to create a Gmail account before adding it to your device
If you don't have a Gmail account yet, create one using a non-managed device or a web browser:
- Go to accounts.google.com on any device or web browser.
- Click Create account.
- Complete the account creation process.
- Once created, use those credentials to sign in on your Esper-enrolled device following the steps above.
How to pre-provision accounts for multiple devices
If you manage a large fleet of devices, consider these approaches:
- Google Workspace: Use Google Admin Console to create and manage user accounts in bulk before device enrollment.
- Google Zero-Touch Enrollment or KME: Pre-assign managed accounts during the device provisioning process.
Troubleshooting
Sign-in still fails after entering credentials
Check your Blueprint settings to ensure no account restrictions are blocking the sign-in:
- In the Esper Console, go to Blueprints → [Your Blueprint Name] → Device Settings → Account Settings.
- Verify that no allowlist or domain restrictions are blocking the Gmail account you're trying to add.
- If restrictions are in place and need adjustment, update them and re-attempt sign-in.
You need to create accounts directly on managed devices
On-device account creation is not possible on Esper-enrolled devices due to Android's Device Owner restrictions. This limitation applies to all Android MDM platforms, not just Esper. Plan your account provisioning strategy before device enrollment.
