iOS VPP App Updates in Esper: No Per-App Update Visibility — Use Group-Level Configuration
iOS
iOS
If you manage iOS devices with Volume Purchase Program (VPP) apps in Esper, you may notice that the Esper Console doesn't show which apps have updates available or offer a way to update individual apps. This article explains how to update VPP apps on your managed devices using group-level Apps & Configuration.
What you need to know about iOS VPP app updates
Esper's iOS Apps & Configuration has the following limitations:
- the Esper Console doesn't display which app versions have updates available.
- You cannot update individual apps in isolation through a dedicated "update" action.
- Silent or background app updates are not available.
- Full device convergence updates all managed apps at once and may cause 5–15 minutes of user-facing disruption.
However, you can work around these limitations by using the Install action for apps that are already installed, which triggers an update to the latest available version without causing data loss.
Before you begin
- Verify that the app's new version is correctly licensed and assigned under your VPP token in Esper's Apps & Configuration settings.
- Plan your rollout timing to minimize disruption to end users.
How to update a VPP app using group-level Apps & Configuration
- Go to Devices & Groups → Views → List: Groups.
- Select the device group containing the devices that need the app update.
- Click Actions → Apps & Configuration.
- Locate the VPP application that needs an update.
- Select Install. Do not uninstall the app first — pushing Install on an already-installed app will update it to the latest available VPP-licensed version without wiping app data or logging out users.
- Configure scheduling options if you want to phase the rollout or defer to off-hours, then confirm the action.
- Repeat for additional groups as needed to implement a phased rollout across your fleet.
How to monitor update progress
You can verify that apps are updating by checking the Activity Feed:
- For a specific group: Go to Devices & Groups → Views → Group View → [Select Group] → Activity Feed.
- For all groups: Go to Devices & Groups → Activity Feed.
Confirm that install events are logged as completed for the targeted devices. On each device, verify that the app version in Settings or the app's About screen matches the expected updated version.
Troubleshooting
If the Install action doesn't trigger an update:
- Check that the new app version is correctly licensed and assigned under your VPP token in Apps & Configuration settings.
- Verify that the device shows the app as already installed; if not, the Install action will perform an initial install instead of an update.
If you need full device convergence:
- Schedule convergence during a maintenance window.
- Communicate the expected 5–15 minutes of downtime to end users in advance to minimize disruption.
If the Install action fails or VPP tokens aren't reflecting the latest licensed versions:
- Contact Esper Support for further investigation.
