Wallpaper not updating after provisioning — migrate Template to Blueprint
Android
When a device is provisioned using a Template, attempts to remotely update the wallpaper after provisioning have no effect — the device continues to display the original wallpaper set during initial setup.
Why this happens
Provisioning Templates apply wallpaper exactly once, at the moment of provisioning. Templates are a static construct: they configure the device at setup time but do not support ongoing remote configuration changes after deployment. To manage wallpaper — or most other settings — remotely after provisioning, the device must be managed by a Blueprint, which is designed for continuous, over-the-air configuration updates.
Migrate the device from a Template to a Blueprint
- Create a new Blueprint in the Esper Console. Navigate to Blueprints and select Create Blueprint. Recreate the settings from your existing Template — apps, network configuration, kiosk mode, compliance policies, and any other relevant settings — so that migrating does not change the device's intended behavior.
- Set the desired wallpaper in the Blueprint. Within the Blueprint editor, navigate to Appearance → Wallpaper and upload or select the wallpaper image to apply to the device.
- Assign the Blueprint to the device. Navigate to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Blueprint and assign the Blueprint created in step 1. This links the device to the Blueprint but does not immediately push changes.
- Apply the Blueprint over-the-air. On the same Blueprint tab, select Upgrade Now to push the Blueprint configuration — including the new wallpaper — to the device without a factory reset. The device must be online for this option to be available. If Upgrade Now is greyed out, confirm the device shows an online status in Devices & Groups, then retry.
- Confirm the Blueprint applied cleanly. Navigate to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Compliance and check that no configuration items are shown as pending or failed. If the wallpaper item shows a failure, review whether the image format and dimensions are supported by the device's Android version.
Verify: The device should display the new wallpaper within a few minutes of the Blueprint being applied. In the Esper Console, Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Blueprint should show the Blueprint as the active configuration with a compliant status.
Updating the wallpaper going forward
Once a device is Blueprint-managed, update the wallpaper at any time by editing the Blueprint at Blueprints → [Blueprint Name] → Appearance → Wallpaper and saving the change. The update is pushed to all devices assigned to that Blueprint without re-provisioning.
If the device cannot migrate without a factory reset
In some cases — typically where the installed Esper Agent version is incompatible with Blueprint management — the Upgrade Now option will not be available even when the device is online. In this situation, re-provision the device from scratch using a Blueprint-based QR code or Zero-Touch Enrollment, with the desired wallpaper already configured in the Blueprint before provisioning begins.
If this doesn't resolve it
If the wallpaper still does not update after completing these steps, contact Esper Support with the following information:
- Device serial number
- Esper Agent version (visible at Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Device Info)
- A screenshot of the compliance status from Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Compliance
- The name of the Blueprint assigned to the device
Still need help?
If the steps above don't resolve the issue, submit a support ticket with your device model, Android version, Esper Agent version, and a description of what you've already tried — this helps the support team investigate without a follow-up.
