USB File Transfer requires manual MTP toggle to be recognized by Windows PC on Samsung devices
Windows
When you connect a Samsung device managed by Esper to a Windows PC via USB, the device may not immediately appear in Windows Explorer for file transfer, even if the USB connection type is already set to File Transfer. This article explains the issue and how to resolve it.
About this issue
This is a Samsung device-level behavior, not caused by Esper. Samsung devices under certain firmware versions do not correctly signal MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) readiness to Windows on initial USB connection. The device must re-negotiate the MTP session to become visible in Windows Explorer.
Before you begin
- Use a USB cable that supports data transfer (not a charge-only cable)
- Verify your Windows PC has the appropriate MTP/portable device driver installed
- Check your Samsung device's firmware version (Settings → About device)
How to fix this
- Connect your Samsung device to the Windows PC via USB cable
- On your Android device, pull down the notification shade and tap the USB connection notification (for example, "Charging this device via USB" or "File Transfer")
- In the USB connection options panel, select a different mode — for example, Charging only
- Immediately switch back to File Transfer / MTP
- Wait 2–3 seconds for Windows to re-enumerate the device
- Open Windows Explorer on your PC. Your Samsung device should now appear under This PC as a portable device, with internal storage and SD card accessible
If this doesn't work
- Try a different USB cable to rule out a cable issue
- Check Device Manager on your Windows PC for driver errors
- Test on a second Windows PC to determine if the issue is specific to your computer
- If the workaround consistently fails, contact Esper Support and include:
- Your Samsung device model and exact firmware/One UI version
- The Esper agent version installed on your device
- Screenshots or descriptions of any errors you see
