App Download Blocked After Blueprint Change: Publish and Converge to Restore Access
Android
If you've modified a Blueprint and can't download an app to your managed device, the changes may not have been published or applied to the device. This article explains how to publish your Blueprint and converge it to your device so the app can install.
Before you begin
Make sure you have the following information:
- The name of the Blueprint assigned to your device
- The package name of the app you're trying to install
- Access to the Esper Console
Step 1: Identify which Blueprint is assigned to your device
- In the Esper Console, go to Devices & Groups.
- Click your device name.
- Open the Blueprint tab and note the Blueprint name and version.
Step 2: Review your Blueprint app settings
- Go to Blueprints and click the Blueprint name.
- Click Edit.
- Check these settings:
- Apps section: Confirm the app you want to install is listed and set to Show (not Hide or Uninstall).
- Play Store access: If you're installing from Google Play Store, confirm it's enabled.
- Kiosk mode: If kiosk mode is enabled, the app must be added to the approved app list to be accessible.
- Allowlist/Blocklist: Confirm the app is not blocked.
- Make any necessary corrections.
Step 3: Publish the Blueprint
- After making changes, click Publish to commit the new configuration.
- Wait for the publish action to complete.
Step 4: Converge your device to the updated Blueprint
- Go to Devices & Groups and click your device name.
- Open the Blueprint tab.
- Click Converge to apply the updated Blueprint to your device.
- Wait for the status to show Applied.
If multiple devices are affected, you can converge at the group level instead.
Step 5: Try installing the app again
Once the convergence status shows Applied, attempt to download the app on your device. The app should now install without restriction.
Verify the Blueprint version
- Go to Devices & Groups → [Your Device] → Blueprint.
- Confirm the Blueprint version displayed matches the version you just published.
- Try installing the app again — it should succeed.
Troubleshooting
The Blueprint shows as Applied, but the app is still blocked:
- Take a screenshot or screen recording of the exact error message or failure on your device.
- Check that the Google account linked to your device has access to the app.
- If kiosk mode is enabled, verify that the specific app has been added to the kiosk allowlist — enabling Play Store alone is not sufficient.
- If the device is offline or the converge command is stuck in Queued state, restore connectivity and try converging again.
Understanding Blueprint publish vs. save:
- Saving a Blueprint draft does not apply changes to devices. You must click Publish to commit the configuration.
- Publishing a Blueprint does not automatically push it to devices. You must manually converge each device (or group) to apply the updated Blueprint.
Still need help?
If the app still won't install after following these steps, contact Esper Support and provide:
- Blueprint name and version
- Device serial number or IMEI
- App package name
- Screenshot of the error message or failure
