Dual-SIM automatic switching not available — alternative approaches
Android
When managing dual-SIM Android devices through Esper, automatic SIM switching based on signal strength or network availability is not supported, and no configuration in the Esper Console can enable it.
Why this happens
Automatic SIM switching is an operating system and OEM-level capability built into device firmware, not a function exposed to MDM platforms. Android's SubscriptionManager and TelephonyManager APIs that control SIM selection are not accessible through Esper's management layer. This applies to all dual-SIM Android devices, regardless of manufacturer or Android version.
What Esper does support for dual-SIM devices
While automatic switching is not available, you can use the Esper Console to:
- Configure APN settings per SIM slot via Blueprints → Network Settings → APN Settings
- View SIM information, including carrier name and ICCID, via Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Device Info
Alternative approaches
- Check your device's built-in SIM settings. Many dual-SIM devices include a native automatic SIM selection mode in the device firmware itself, outside of any MDM. Open the device's Settings → SIM & Network (label varies by OEM) and look for an option such as "Preferred SIM" or "Automatic SIM switching." Refer to your device manufacturer's documentation for the exact steps.
- Deploy a third-party SIM management app through Esper. A SIM switching application can handle switching logic independently of Esper. Navigate to Apps & Configuration → Apps, upload or select the app, and push it to the target devices or group. Note that some SIM management apps require Device Owner permissions or system-level grants — test the app in a non-production group first to confirm it does not conflict with any kiosk or lockdown settings already applied.
- Submit a feature request. If automatic SIM switching is critical to your deployment, submit a feature request through the Esper Console under Help → Feature Requests so the product team can track demand.
If this doesn't resolve it
If the OEM firmware option is not present on your device or the third-party app is not behaving as expected, contact Esper Support with the following information:
- Device make, model, and Android version
- Name and version of any third-party SIM management app being tested
- A description of the switching behavior observed versus expected
- Any relevant entries from Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Activity Feed
Still need help?
If the steps above don't resolve the issue, submit a support ticket with your device model, Android version, Esper Agent version, and a description of what you've already tried — this helps the support team investigate without a follow-up.
