Volume settings applied via Esper Console not reflected on device: Media stream vs. Ring/Alarm stream mismatch on Android TV/Stick devices
Android
If you've applied volume settings through the Esper Console to an Android TV or Android Stick device and the changes aren't taking effect, this article explains why and how to fix it.
Understand the issue
Android TV and Android Stick devices handle audio differently than phones and tablets. These devices primarily use the Media audio stream for all audio output. When you apply volume changes to the Ring or Alarm streams on these device types, the Esper Console delivers the commands successfully, but the device doesn't respond because those streams aren't actively used.
If you're experiencing issues with the Media volume not persisting after you apply changes, that's a separate issue that requires additional troubleshooting.
Fix Ring or Alarm volume not reflecting on your device
- In the Esper Console, go to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Settings → Sound.
- Use the Media volume control instead of Ring or Alarm. On Android TV and Android Stick devices, only the Media stream affects actual audio output.
- Set your desired volume level and click Apply Changes.
- Check the Activity Feed to confirm the command shows as delivered and executed.
- Play audio on the device to verify the Media volume is at the expected level.
Troubleshoot Media volume not persisting
If you've set the Media volume and it reverts on the device even though the Esper Console shows the command was executed, follow these steps:
- In the Esper Console, go to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Settings → Sound.
- Set a specific Media volume value and click Apply Changes.
- Refresh the Esper Console page and check if the value persists.
- Check the Activity Feed to confirm the command was delivered and acknowledged.
- If the value has reverted on the device, collect a bug report immediately by going to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Actions → Bug Report.
- Contact Esper Support and include the bug report, the Activity Feed screenshot, and your device model details.
If the issue persists
If adjusting the Media stream doesn't produce any audio changes on your device:
- Your device may have OEM-level audio restrictions or a custom Android build that overrides Esper volume commands. Contact Esper Support and provide your device's full
adb bugreportoutput. - If the Media volume appears correct in the Esper Console but reverts after a device reboot, contact Esper Support with your device model, Android version, Esper Agent version, and the bug report.
Still need help?
If you've tried these steps and your volume settings still aren't working, submit a support ticket. Include your device model, Android version, Esper Agent version, and any bug reports you've collected.
