Auto-open app closes and doesn't relaunch after agent update in multi-app mode
Android
When an Esper Agent update runs on a device configured with an auto-open app in multi-app mode, the app may stop and fail to relaunch automatically after the update completes.
Why this happens
Certain Esper Agent versions interrupt foreground app processes during the update sequence. Once the update finishes, the auto-open app remains in a stopped state instead of being restarted by the launcher. This behavior affects multi-app mode devices with an auto-open app configured — it does not affect single-app kiosk mode.
Recover the affected device
Use any one of the following methods to relaunch the app:
- Reboot the device remotely — navigate to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Actions and select Reboot. The auto-open app relaunches automatically as part of the boot sequence.
- Launch the app via Remote Viewer — navigate to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Remote Viewer and tap the app icon to bring it to the foreground.
- Launch the app directly on the device — if the device is physically accessible, tap the app icon in the launcher to open it manually.
Prevent recurrence
- Confirm the auto-open app setting is correct in your blueprint. Navigate to Blueprints → [Blueprint Name] → Apps & Configuration and verify the intended app is designated as the auto-open app. An incorrect or missing setting here means the launcher has no app to reopen after a reboot or update.
- Re-apply the blueprint to affected devices. Navigate to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Blueprint and select Apply. This pushes the current configuration back to the device and resets any launcher state that may have been disrupted by the update.
- Monitor the device through the next Esper Agent update cycle. Navigate to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Activity Feed and confirm the auto-open app remains running after the update completes.
If this doesn't resolve it
If the app continues to close after agent updates, or if you identify a new Esper Agent version triggering the same behavior, contact Esper Support and include the following:
- The Esper Agent version installed on affected devices (found at Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Device Info)
- The device IDs experiencing the issue
- A bug report captured immediately after the app stops — navigate to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Bug Report to generate one
- Your blueprint name and the auto-open app package name

Still need help?
If the steps above don't resolve the issue, submit a support ticket with your device model, Android version, Esper Agent version, and a description of what you've already tried — this helps the support team investigate without a follow-up.
