TV device not connecting to internet: triage and escalation steps for Esper-enrolled smart TVs
Android
Title: Smart TV not connecting to internet after Esper enrollment — fix Wi-FiWhen an Esper-enrolled smart TV loses internet connectivity or fails to connect during initial setup, the device may appear offline in the Esper Console, show a stale heartbeat timestamp, or display no network connection on screen.
Why this happens
Smart TVs running Android TV or Google TV often use non-standard Wi-Fi management APIs that can conflict with Esper's network configuration. The most common causes are missing or incorrect Wi-Fi credentials in the Blueprint or provisioning template, a Kiosk Mode policy locking the system Wi-Fi settings, or a proxy/VPN policy blocking outbound traffic after the device comes online.
Before you start
Collect the following before working through the steps below — you will need this information if the issue is not resolved:
- TV brand and model number
- Android version (visible at Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Device Info)
- Esper device ID (visible at Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Device Info)
Steps
- Check your blueprint's Wi-Fi configuration. Navigate to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Blueprints and open the applied blueprint. Locate the Network section and confirm the SSID, security type, and password are all present and correct. A single character mismatch in a WPA2 passphrase will prevent connection.
- Re-apply the blueprint to push updated network settings. From Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Blueprints, select Apply Blueprint. This forces the Esper Agent to re-download and apply all network settings to the device. The TV should come online within 60 seconds.
- Check whether Kiosk Mode is locking the system Wi-Fi settings. Go to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Settings and review the active policy. If Kiosk Mode is enabled, the device's native Android Wi-Fi settings menu may be inaccessible. Temporarily disable Kiosk Mode, then use the TV's built-in settings to connect to Wi-Fi manually, and re-enable Kiosk Mode once connectivity is confirmed.
- If the TV has never been online, verify the provisioning template. A device that has never connected may have been provisioned with a QR code that did not include Wi-Fi credentials. Navigate to Provisioning → Provisioning Templates → [Template Name] and select Edit. Confirm the SSID and password fields are populated, regenerate the QR code, and re-provision the device.
- Check for proxy or VPN policy conflicts. If the Esper Console shows the device as online but the TV has no working internet connection, a policy may be intercepting outbound traffic. Go to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Blueprints, review any configured proxy or VPN settings, and temporarily disable them to determine whether connectivity is restored.
- Confirm your TV model is on Esper's validated hardware list. Some TV manufacturers ship heavily customized Android builds with non-standard Wi-Fi APIs. If the blueprint applies successfully and the Console shows the device as compliant but internet access is still not working, a hardware compatibility issue may be the cause. Check the Esper documentation for the validated hardware list or contact Esper Support before continuing.
If this doesn't resolve it
If the TV remains offline after working through all steps above, contact Esper Support with the following information:
- TV brand, model, and Android version
- Esper device ID
- Screenshot of the blueprint's Network section
- Screenshot of the device's Activity Feed (Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Activity Feed)
- Whether the device has ever successfully connected, or has never been online
- Any error codes shown on the TV screen during setup
Still need help?
If the steps above don't resolve the issue, submit a support ticket with your device model, Android version, Esper Agent version, and a description of what you've already tried — this helps the support team investigate without a follow-up.
