Blueprint deletion fails — remove or reassign all linked devices first
Android
When attempting to delete a Blueprint in the Esper Console, you see the error Cannot delete the blueprint as it is associated with one or more devices and the deletion does not proceed.
Why this happens
Esper prevents Blueprint deletion while any device record — active, inactive, or previously removed — still holds an internal association with that Blueprint. Even devices that no longer appear in your standard device list can retain a hidden database link. The Blueprint cannot be deleted until every association is fully severed.
Step 1: Identify all devices linked to the Blueprint
- Open the Esper Console and go to Blueprints.
- Select the blueprint you want to delete.
- Select the Devices tab to view every associated device, including any in an inactive or unusual state.
- Note the name and serial number of each listed device. You will work through this list in the steps below.
Step 2: Reassign devices still in active use
For each active device listed on the Devices tab:
- Go to Devices & Groups and select the device name.
- Select the Blueprint tab, then select Apply.
- Choose a valid replacement blueprint and confirm the selection. Applying a different blueprint moves the device's association away from the blueprint you want to delete.
- Select Converge to push the new configuration to the device.
- Repeat for every active device on the list.
Step 3: Remove devices no longer in use
For each device you no longer need, including any in a deleted or ghost state:
- Go to Devices & Groups and select the device name.
- Select Device Actions, then select Remove Device.
- Select Factory Reset and Wipe — not Remove Only. Removing a device without wiping it can leave the internal Blueprint association intact, which continues to block deletion even though the device is no longer visible in your list.
- Confirm the action to fully sever the device from the Esper Console.
- Repeat for every inactive device on the list.
Step 4: Check for Group-level Blueprint assignments
If the blueprint is set as the default blueprint for a Group, that association also blocks deletion.
- Go to Devices & Groups and select the Groups view.
- Open each Group and check its Blueprint settings.
- If the blueprint you want to delete is set as the default, select a different blueprint or remove the assignment entirely.
Step 5: Delete the Blueprint
- Go to Blueprints and locate the blueprint you want to delete.
- Select Delete and confirm.
If this doesn't resolve it
If the error persists after completing all steps above, a device record may be in a ghost state not visible through the standard console view. Contact Esper Support and include:
- The exact blueprint name
- Serial numbers of any devices that were associated with it
- The exact error message:
Cannot delete the blueprint as it is associated with one or more devices - Screenshots of the Devices tab on the blueprint, if any devices are still listed
Still need help?
If the steps above don't resolve the issue, submit a support ticket with your device model, Android version, Esper Agent version, and a description of what you've already tried — this helps the support team investigate without a follow-up.
