Managed Google Play binding fails — complete Android Enterprise enrollment
Android
When Google Play app deployment fails from the Esper Console, the device cannot install or receive managed apps because the Android Enterprise EMM binding is incomplete, missing, or attached to a conflicting Google account.
Why this happens
Esper requires an active Android Enterprise binding between your tenant and a Managed Google Play account before any Play Store apps can be deployed. This binding fails when the enrollment flow is interrupted (commonly by using Microsoft Edge instead of Chrome), or when the Google account used has already been registered to a different Android Enterprise organization — even one in another region or business entity. Google does not allow a single account to be bound to more than one organization.
What you need before starting
- Admin access to the Esper Console
- Google Chrome (Microsoft Edge will not complete the enrollment redirect)
- A generic Gmail account (for example,
devicemanagement@gmail.com) that has never been used to register any Android Enterprise or Managed Google Play organization
Steps
- Open the Esper Console in Google Chrome. Navigate to your Esper Console URL in Chrome. The Android Enterprise enrollment flow uses a Google-hosted redirect that does not complete correctly in Microsoft Edge.
- Go to the Android Enterprise settings. In the Esper Console, navigate to Company Settings → Android Enterprise. If a previous binding attempt is shown, remove or reset it before continuing so the new enrollment starts from a clean state.
- Start the Managed Google Play enrollment. Select the option to enroll in Managed Google Play. When prompted, sign in with your generic Gmail account — not a corporate domain account, and not any account previously used to register an Android Enterprise organization.
- Complete the on-screen registration. Follow the prompts in the Google enrollment flow. On the final screen, select Complete Sign Up. Chrome automatically redirects you back to the Esper Console. The binding status in Company Settings → Android Enterprise should now show as active.
- Add Google Play apps to a Blueprint. Navigate to Blueprints and create or edit a blueprint. Add the Google Play applications you want to deploy. Set the app update mode to High Priority so Play Store apps update automatically when new versions are released. Enable Control Managed Google Play Services in the blueprint settings to ensure Play Store app management functions correctly.
- Publish the Blueprint to a test device. Apply the blueprint to a single test device before rolling out broadly, so you can confirm Play Store apps install as expected.
If this doesn't resolve it
If the binding still fails or the Google account shows a conflict error during enrollment, confirm that the Gmail account has never been associated with any Android Enterprise organization — including legacy accounts from previous MDM platforms. If you are unsure, create a brand-new Gmail account and attempt enrollment again.
If the binding shows as active but Play Store apps still fail to install, collect the following before contacting Esper Support:
- A screenshot of Company Settings → Android Enterprise showing the current binding status
- The device name and its current Blueprint assignment from Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Blueprint
- The names of the apps failing to install and any error messages shown in Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Apps
- Confirmation of which browser was used during the enrollment flow
Contact Esper Support with this information.
Still need help?
If the steps above don't resolve the issue, submit a support ticket with your device model, Android version, Esper Agent version, and a description of what you've already tried — this helps the support team investigate without a follow-up.
