App uninstalled after device reboot: pending uninstall command executed on reconnect
Android
If an app you reinstalled on your device was automatically uninstalled after a reboot, this is likely because a pending uninstall command was executed when your device reconnected to Esper. This article explains why this happens and how to recover your devices.
Understanding the issue
When you issue an uninstall command to a device that is offline or unreachable, the command enters a pending state in Esper's queue. If you reinstall the app before verifying that the uninstall command completed, the pending uninstall command will execute the next time your device reboots and reconnects—automatically removing the app you just reinstalled.
How to recover affected devices
- Navigate to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Apps.
- Push the required app version to the affected device.
- Go to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Activity Feed and verify that the install command shows a Completed status before proceeding with any other actions.
- Use Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Remote View to confirm the app is present and running on your device.
How to prevent this in the future
Always verify that an uninstall command has completed before reinstalling an app:
- Navigate to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Activity Feed.
- Locate the uninstall command and confirm its status is Completed (not In Progress, Queued, or Pending).
- Only proceed with reinstallation after the uninstall reaches a completed state.
If the app continues to be uninstalled after reboot
- Check for additional pending commands: Go to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Activity Feed and look for any other commands stuck in In Progress or Queued state. Cancel or allow these to complete before reinstalling the app.
- Check your Blueprint: Navigate to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Blueprint and verify that the app is set to Install status, not removed or absent. A Blueprint-level removal directive could be causing the app to uninstall automatically.
